BATTLE TO SAVE THE HUMBLE SEASIDE POSTCARD

Wednesday March 26,2008

Jo Willey

THE great British postcard has long been a vital part of any seaside holiday.

But it seems the tradition now faces extinction, because of the decline in letter-writing.

The rise of mobile phones and emails means people feel much less inclined to spend time writing a card to loved ones.

Research reveals that postcard use has plummeted by 75 per cent in the past 10 years.

Now Coast magazine has launched a campaign and a competition to redress the balance. It also wants to preserve the record that postcards create of the changing coastline and seaside communities.

Coast magazine editor Clare Gogerty, said: “Postcards are as important to the British seaside as fish and chips or rock.
“We are in danger of losing this silly, saucy and sunny way of communicating.

MEMORIES: Traditional postcards have been popular in Britain for decades

“They are the perfect way of saying ‘Thinking of you’ when you are travelling.”

The campaign is launched in the April issue on sale now.
