RUGBY LEAGUE

SAINTS SEAL DERBY WIN

St Helens took over at the top of the engage Super League after demonstrating their defensive prowess to edge a memorable 19-12 victory over Wigan in a rip-roaring derby in front of a 22,232 crowd at the JJB Stadium.

Wigan produced their best performance of the season to dominate the match for long periods but failed to turn their territorial advantage into points and paid the price.

All eyes were on debutant Martin Gleeson, the former St Helens centre, and he produced some neat touches among a host of impressive displays by the home side, who were unlucky not to gain at least a point. Saints looked distinctly out of sorts but showed great character to come from 12-6 down, sealing victory with two tries in three minutes from Matt Gidley and Leon Pryce.

Elsewhere, Jerome Guisset's two tries ensured Catalans Dragons recorded only their second engage Super League victory of the season, with a 28-22 win at the expense of inconsistent Harlequins.

The France captain punished an error-ridden Quins performance with a try in each half, while Casey McGuire, Clint Greenshields and Olivier Elima also scored for the Dragons.

Quins - who bowed out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup to Huddersfield Giants last weekend - struggled to get into the game and despite a late charge, tries from Matt Gardner, Jason Golden, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Chris Melling were not enough.
