GRAMMARS 'SHOULD HELP WEAK SCHOOLS'

Sir Cyril Taylor said grammars need to do more for poorer children

Wednesday May 23,2007

Every grammar school in the country should twin with a failing comprehensive to raise standards, a top Government adviser said on Wednesday.

Sir Cyril Taylor, chairman of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, said grammars need to do more to help children from the poorest families.

He said he would not want to close the remaining 164 selective grammars in England but suggested that every one of them could form partnerships with weaker schools nearby.

Sir Cyril's comments came as Tory leader David Cameron faced protests within his own party over his decision to ditch long-standing Conservative support for grammars.

Sir Cyril told MPs that only about 1% of pupils in grammar schools were from families which are so poor that they are entitled to free school meals.

Speaking to the Commons Education Select Committee, he said: "One grammar school in Gloucester is "going out on to the council estates to identify very able children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds."

In another example he cited a partnership between a grammar school in Reading which is "linking" with an "under-performing" school nearby.

"Why can't all 164 grammar schools help an under-performing school?" he said.

Sir Cyril is a key figure in the Government's school policies as an adviser to Education Secretary Alan Johnson who oversees the specialist schools and academies programmes.

GREAT IDEA - AT FIRST THOUGHT ONLY!

23.05.07, 8:51pm

The only reason that I say that this is a good idea is simply because the Government don’t have a clue how to help poorly performing schools or get educational standards back to an acceptable level, so you might as well let the experts (said tongue in cheek) have a go at helping out. Seriously though, just what are the ‘stronger’ schools going to do to help the ‘weaker’ ones? Do they (the government) think that teachers are going to just give up on their current students and risk seeing them suffer a drop in the standards that they have worked hard to achieve? Yet again we hear what appears initially to be a good idea but in reality has obviously not been given much thought to the practicalities – or the cost! If they (the government again) can afford to suggest this type of scheme then how about using the money to build more schools and train more teachers instead.

THE BRIGHT GRAMMAR SCHOOL KIDS MAY BE LESS INCOMPETENT THAN MANY TEACHERS!

23.05.07, 6:05pm

And may even have the upper hand on discipline if they are attacked by yobs they can hit back instead of having to turn the other cheek.

The only stipulation I would make is that you must take the knives and guns away from the yobs first!

GRAMMARS........

23.05.07, 5:27pm

How unbelievably naive. So the Grammar school kids won't look down on the 'thickies' from the poorly performing comp. and the yobs won't want to kick the posh kids heads in? Get real.
