BARRAGE OF CRITICISM FOR HEWITT

Patricia Hewitt is facing a Commons vote of no confidence

Wednesday May 23,2007

Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt faced a barrage of criticism on Wednesday over her stewardship of the NHS.

Prime Minister Tony Blair was forced to defend his position and her record after accusations from Tory leader David Cameron that he had hung her "out to dry".

Ms Hewitt also faced angry scenes in Brighton as she told midwives at the Royal College of Midwives' (RCM) annual conference of the need for closures to some maternity units.

As pressure mounted on the Health Secretary, the Tories released figures claiming that up to one in three consultant-led maternity units could close across England. They based that on a report from national director for maternity services Sheila Shribman which detailed closure within the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

Two units each catered for around 2,500 births a year but, on their own, neither was big enough to justify the money needed to retain specialist skills, the report said. The Tories suggested that if other trusts across England took that figure as a guide, up to one in three units could close.

The figures were released as the Tories used one of their opposition day debates to table a motion calling for Ms Hewitt's salary to be cut by £1,000 - the traditional way of signalling no confidence in a minister.

Earlier, she faced angry midwives but insisted evidence showed there was a need for reconfiguring services. Doctors assessing changes in Manchester had told her that babies' lives could be saved that way, she said. She said she could understand why there was a need for other services outside midwifery-led units but that doctors and midwives had made a clinical case for change.

She admitted that recommendations on the potential closure of services in Manchester were "quite difficult and unpopular" but it was good for babies and mothers and that is "very convincing".

She said: "It makes perfect sense to me - as a mother of two - that if you are having a birth in a consultant-led unit and you need an anaesthetist, you want that anaesthetist to be a specialist, and that does mean you need more (care) than you would get at a midwifery-led unit."

But she added: "I think that what you are seeing in Manchester are doctors and midwives saying that you need fewer specialist services and fewer consultant-led units and in that case you save up to 30 babies' lives a year. Now I don't think we can walk away from that kind of evidence."

SACK HEWITT

23.05.07, 7:31pm

Patricia Hewitt has proven that she is as useless as tits on a bull.
Sack her before she does more damage and further proves more inadequacies which we will die or pay for, C.Diff and MRSA, thanks Pat.
You and your Marxist Nulabour have brought this little country to its knees and killed it in 10 years, you have done that which the might of the German nation failed to do, Napoleon failed also with massive armies.

Heaven help us as we have no-one to lead us, except maybe the BNP.

HEWITT FACES 'NO CONFIDENCE' VOTE

23.05.07, 1:50pm

Oh Gordon! WHY ON EARTH do you want to be Prime minister?

First I read about Miserably Moribund Miliband, would look good at playing Hitler in at war film.

Then I read about dearly beloved 'Daft' Darling, no darling of mine I can assure you.

Next came 'Krazy' Kelly? a walking disaster area if ever I saw one.

And now we have Hopelessly Helpless Hewitt, who has never been capable of doing anything properly.

I daresay if I bothered about being thorough I could probably find quite a lot more of your government who, at best, are useless and at worst criminal.

Tone Benn, if he's still in politics must be thinking that he's in a lunatic asylum! that is more than likely the best place for a lot of your comrades.

AS EVER MAKE NON JOBS, AND FIDDLE THE FIGURES

23.05.07, 12:08pm

Why is it in everything we see coming from this inept government, so bereft of common sense?

More money in Education.... yes spent on admin staff post created to monitor the targets set...

More money on Healthcare.... yes spent on Non jobs to assess and meet targets.....

More money on Police.... More plastic policemen that the public do not trust, will not listen to, and the officers themselves do not have the same powers... Policing on the cheap, whilst the real Policemen and women are stuck in the stations dealing with paperwork created to assess and monitor targets...

It is about time this minister and all ministers fell on their swords, however as they have no decency nor any honour, they should be sacked forthwith!

NO CONFIDENCE

23.05.07, 11:54am

I think Ms Hewitt should do the decent thing and resign before Gordon removes her from post!! this womens lack of understanding over patients health and well being is remarkable. As a former NHS nurse, the changes that have happened within the health service particularly with the constant reorganisation of managerial positions is ludicrous. Too many Managers on large salaries need to be streamlined, and more money put into direct patient care i.e. employ more nurses and therapy staff i.e. physios, etc.
it doesnt matter how much money is pumped into the service, until the mamangement structure is sorted out, nothing will get better!
