BRITONS WARNED OVER GAZA TRAVEL

The Foreign Office has warned against travel to Gaza Strip

Monday May 21,2007

British travellers in Israel have been warned against going within three miles of the Gaza Strip, because of the danger from rockets fired into Israel by militant forces.

A week of violence between Hamas and Fatah factions in Gaza and rocket attacks into Israel has been followed by a series of Israeli military strikes on the enclave.

Since last week, some 36 Palestinians have been killed in airstrikes which Israel says are targeted at militants of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad groups.

Despite the air attacks, four more rockets have been fired into Israel, according to Israeli army sources.

New travel advice issued by the Foreign Office stated: "We advise against all but essential travel to areas within five kilometres of the Gaza perimeter, including (the city of) Sderot, because of rocket fire from Gaza."

It added: "A high threat from terrorism in Israel remains. The most recent terrorist attack took place in January 2007 in the Red Sea resort of Eilat.

"Following renewed Israeli military action in Gaza in May 2007, Palestinian militant groups have threatened attacks in Israel."
