MURDERED: Victim Kevin cradles his seven-month-old son Chase

Monday May 21,2007

By Ian Kay

A young father was stabbed to death after complaining to youths that their noise was keeping his seven-month-old son awake.

Kevin Johnson was killed as he confronted three youths early yesterday.

Minutes after 22-year-old Mr Johnson was attacked for complaining that his son Chase was being kept awake, another man was stabbed, for no apparent reason, during a disturbance nearby.

Police believe that both incidents are linked.

They are also investigating reports that earlier in the evening tyres on several cars in the area were slashed.

Mr Johnson, a demolition worker, was stabbed and left for dead on the pavement, yards from his home in Pennywell, Sunderland.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, but died from his injuries.

Just two minutes later, police were told that three men had been causing damage nearby.

And three minutes after that incident, at 12.30am, a second man was approached by a gang of three youths at a nearby road junction. He was stabbed  in the chest in an apparently unprovoked attack.

At 2am, 90 minutes after the killing, police were called after three men caused a disturbance on the forecourt of a Shell garage on The Broadway.

It is just a few hundred yards from Partick Road where Kevin Johnson lived with fiancee Adele Marie Brett, 26, and their baby son.

Police spent much of the weekend making door-to-door inquiries on the estate, and officers searched a cordoned-off
area around Partick Road.

Neighbour John Adams, 63, a retired farmer, said: “He hadn’t lived there long but they seemed a nice couple who kept themselves to themselves.

“This is one of the quietest streets on the estate, but I still get a taxi everywhere when it’s late. I wouldn’t want to walk about late at night, it just isn’t safe.

“You never normally see any police around here.”

The injuries to the other man attacked are not life-threatening. Detective Chief Inspector Roger Ford, leading the murder investigation, said: “Kevin’s family want to thank everyone who has come forward to the police so far and
are urging anyone else with information to come forward for his sake.

“I would urge anyone who has any information, no matter how trivial they may think it is, to come forward to help us catch those responsible.

“We now believe there are strong links between the incidents last night.”

Two youths aged 16 and 17 were later arrested on suspicion of murder and a third youth is still being sought.
After the killing, dozens of foot patrols were launched in the Pennywell area.

Superintendent Kay Blyth, of Sunderland area command, said a number of officers had voluntarily cancelled leave to come to work and extra officers would be moved into the area in the coming days.

She explained: “We understand people’s concern about knife crime but I want to stress that the region remains a safe place to live and work.

“We should also point out that stranger attacks are very rare.”

FATHER STABBED TO DEATH BY YOBS FOR COMPLAINING ABOUT THE NOISE.

21.05.07, 11:41am

Another heartbreaking story and a waste of a young mans life. I would like just one newspaper to record the amount of murders that we now have in just one year. When will the government and the house of lords realise that we need new laws and stronger deterrents. In listening to the PC brigade we now have almost a lawless society. If something is not done then we will have vigilante groups taking the law into their own hands. Too many people are being left heartbroken by these senseless murders. Maybe it is time to reintroduce some form of capital punishment (lethal injection) as prison is far too cushy for these evil people.

But murdering scumbags have their Human Rights protected no matter what the cost to honest decent people, condolances to his family!

And a sincere wish that these animals end up in a prison living in fear afraid to pick up the soap for many years to come!
