GABRIEL BLASTS OPRAH

Friday May 18,2007

Good news for admirers of film heart-throb Gabriel Byrne – he doesn’t mind the odd wrinkle.

The Usual Suspects star is no fan of airbrushed pictures of celebrities and singles out Oprah Winfrey’s eponymous glossy mag for particular ire.

The Irishman, 57, who is divorced from actress Ellen Barkin, recently picked up a copy of Oprah magazine and was horrified to find so many pictures of women made to look younger.

“Every single picture was airbrushed,” he says. “Women look at those pictures and say, ‘Why don’t I look like that?’ And husbands pick it up and say, ‘Why doesn’t my wife look like that at 50?’

“There’s a picture of Oprah on the cover where she looks about 12. If I bought a magazine and put pictures of myself looking 19, somebody should say to me, ‘Stop it’.”

He adds: “I saw this hilarious ad that had this woman with two tiny wrinkles by her eyes. It said, ‘This is what you look like at 60’. I just thought, ‘I know nobody who looks like that even at 20’.

“The rules are different for men. My hair goes grey and people say I have character.”
