Katy Perry in her Obama T-shirt

Saturday November 8,2008

Wearing a sequinned dress showing the sparkling face of Barack Obama, pop singer Katy Perry wowed the crowds as host of the MTV Europe Music Awards and made sure the new President knows she’s a fan.

The 24-year-old from California went through a whopping 12 outfits at the glittering awards bash, held at Liverpool’s Echo Arena.

Opening the show in an American football kit as she performed her hit, I Kissed A Girl, Katy’s frocks went from quirky to crackers. Among the unusual creations was a Manish Arora corset dress with a merry-go-round skirt, left, and a blue satin dress with two giant green eyes across the chest by Jean Charles de Castelbajac.

“Katy was nervous about presenting the awards so she made sure she wore some real showstoppers,” said our girl pushing the clothes rail. “The Obama dress made its debut at Castelbajac’s show during Paris Fashion Week last month, where Katy must have spotted it.”

Other winners of the night included a back-on-form Britney Spears, who sent a video link message from LA where she was performing with Madonna, to accept her awards for Act of 2008 and Album of the Year.

But the most unusual trophy went to Eighties crooner Rick Astley who, 21 years since his single Never Gonna Give You Up topped the charts, won a gong for Best Act Ever.
