The claim – by lawyers for Knox’s ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito – ­surprised the pre-trial hearings in Italy.

It was thought Knox and fellow suspect Sollecito had teamed up against third suspect, drifter Rudy Guede.

Meredith, 21, of Coulsdon, Surrey, was found with her throat cut in her bedroom in Perugia last November.

All three defendants deny any involvement in the murder.
