Manuel Uribe: Shed 40 stone

Tuesday October 28,2008

By Laura Clout

EVEN without the 400 guests and lavish buffet it was always going to be a big affair.

The world’s heaviest man got married in front of the TV cameras after being taken to the ceremony on the back of a truck in the bed he has not left for four years.

Manuel Uribe, known as Half-Ton Man, tipped the scales at 88 stone two years ago.

But since a tearful appeal for help on national television, the 43-year-old Mexican has shed 40 stone.

On Sunday he married hairdresser Claudia Solis in a ceremony dubbed “My Big Fat Mexican Wedding”.

“I am proof that you can find love in any circumstances,” he said. “It’s all a question of faith.

“All I want is to be happy and to love and be loved. And today is a very special day because of that.”

The wedding, in Mr Uribe’s home town of Monterrey, will be featured in a TV documentary featuring his attempts to lose weight.

Uribe has been following a strict diet set by his American doctor. However, he is still unable to walk and is still some way off his target weight of 15st 7lbs.

He met Claudia, 38, four years ago at the deathbed of a mutual friend who weighed 39 stone.

Mr Uribe’s mother Orquedia confirmed that the groom didn’t go anywhere near the five-tier wedding cake.

“He didn’t break his diet,” she said. “His doctors were here and they were watching closely.”
