SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has been fined £8,000 for selling a child’s birthday cake that rodents had gnawed.

The caterpillar-shaped cake was ordered by a Cardiff family of four to celebrate a child’s fifth birthday.

When it was delivered to their home in the Rhiwbina area of the city, they found the chocolate cake had been partially eaten, and its box torn.

A Cardiff Council spokeswoman said the cake was attacked by rodents while being stored in a warehouse at Tesco Extra on Western Avenue, Cardiff.

An investigation by the council’s food safety department found bags of food were kept in an external area before being delivered to people’s homes - despite the firm being aware there were mice in the area.

Tesco admitted selling unfit food on April 3, 2007, during a hearing at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The company was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £8,000 costs.
