The brothers are part of a team that hopes to raise £300,000 for worthy causes by taking part in Enduro Africa 08, a gruelling eight-day trek along South Africa’s Hibiscus coast from Port Edward to Port Elizabeth.

Asked about how much training the Princes had done, William, 26, replied: “Absolutely none whatsoever.”

He went on: “The main reason we’re doing this rally is because it’s a mixture of adventure and charity. The money goes to Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund, Unicef and Sentebale, three brilliant charities.”

Harry, 24, added: “We never really spend any time together, we’ve got separate jobs going on. We might argue, we might have a bit of fun. We’ll have to see how it goes but we’re looking forward to it.

“I went to bed shaking and didn’t sleep that well. We’ve got a bet with everybody else about who’s going to fall off.”

The brothers flew economy class on the 11-hour journey from London to South Africa on Friday.

Insiders said the decision was taken in response to the “credit crunch”, and to allay taxpayer costs for what was essentially a private holiday.

However, the Princes still required a staff of six armed minders from Scotland Yard’s Royal Protection Squad. The trip was thought to have cost up to £50,000.
