The fire brigade hopes to reduce fire risks for the homeless

Sunday October 19,2008

ROUGH sleepers are being given smoke alarms to stop them accidentally setting fire to their squats.

The waterproof packs contain a smoke detector, a tin for cigarette ends and a wind-up lantern, as well as washing and shaving kits, eating utensils, a first aid kit, a survival blanket and a sleeping bag.

Firefighters will hand out the first 40 bags at the Alabare drop-in centre in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, on Thursday.

As well as providing fire precautions, the equipment is aimed at helping homeless people through winter nights.

Wiltshire Fire Brigade’s Steve Williams said: “We have attended a number of fires in derelict buildings which have been used as refuges by the homeless, plus a fatal fire involving a homeless man just two years ago.

“We wanted to find a way of reducing the risks for people living on the streets, while providing valuable support for this most vulnerable part of our community.”

The kits were developed with feedback from homeless people, who mentioned their fear of fire in derelict buildings.
