VAUGHAN: Fluent 72

Thursday May 3,2007

By Huw Tubervill

Michael Vaughan’s decision to curtail his holiday and report for county duty has paid off.

The England captain hit 72 for Division One leaders Yorkshire as they posted 299 against title favourites Hampshire at the Rose Bowl yesterday.

Vaughan, who had a disappointing World Cup, hit 11 fours in a three-hour knock against an attack that included Australians Shane Warne and Stuart Clark.

In his first four-day match for Yorkshire for nearly a year, Vaughan was finally run out after being sent back by Pakistan batsman Younis Khan, who struck 106. Potential England all-rounder Adil Rashid hit 54, while Clark and Warne only took one wicket each.

Ex-England one-day batsman Jim Troughton maintained his fine form with 162 for Warwickshire at Worcester.
In Division Two, Monty Panesar’s efforts to readjust his bowling for the longer game did not go entirely smoothly, although he did remove Alastair Cook at Northampton.

The left-arm spinner’s first six overs went for 41, but he conceded only 31 in his next 12.

Bowlers must be sick of Taunton. Somerset’s Championship match with Middlesex produced 1,659 runs for 13 wickets, and yesterday Derbyshire smashed 448-4 there.
