HANNON CHEERED BY GOING

Hannon has threatened to pull out of the 2,000 Guineas

Thursday May 3,2007

By Rolf Johnson

RICHARD HANNON has threatened to withdraw fourth favourite Major Cadeaux from the Stan James 2,000 Guineas on Saturday if the going is too firm, but a fellow trainer was able to allay his fears yesterday.

“Elzee (David Elsworth) told me that  they’re putting buckets on the course,” said Hannon, clearly cheered by Newmarket’s watering policy. “And he owes me.”

Indeed, long-time friend Elsworth, now master of Egerton House Stables in Newmarket,  owed his start on the edge of Salisbury Plain to horses sent by Hannon.

Elsworth has no runner in the 2,000 Guineas but he launches a two-pronged attack against Hannon’s well-fancied Indian Ink in the fillies’ Classic with Vital Statistics and Barshiba.

John Egan is set to ride Barshiba and Elsworth hopes to book the experienced Kevin Darley for his other runner.
Guineas second favourite Sander Camillo drifted out to 5-1 from 3s yesterday.

Newmarket course clerk Michael Prosser is to follow his recent policy and place the stalls in the middle of the track for both Guineas races.

“Our aim is to try to ensure that the best horse wins and by positioning the stalls in the centre of the track, the potential for scrimmaging is minimised,” he said.
