FANS WARNED TO TAKE SEATS EARLY

Tuesday May 1,2007

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have been urged to arrive early at the San Siro tomorrow night — after being left with a lung-bursting climb to their seats.

United’s 4,500 travelling army will be housed in the top tier of the San Siro for the Champions League semi-final second-leg against AC Milan.

But Italian authorities fear the club’s fans will stick to their usual ritual of arriving at the stadium just minutes before kick-off. And with a demanding climb up a spiral staircase to their enclosure, United officials have pleaded with fans to arrive early.

Spokesman Ken Ramsden said: “Our fans have a tradition of arriving late, but we would urge them to get to the San Siro much earlier.”

Fans of United and Chelsea, meanwhile, have been warned about their behaviour at the new Wembley Stadium, ahead of the FA Cup final between the two sides on May 19.

Tarique Ghaffur, assistant police commissioner, said: “I want to warn people wanting to disrupt sporting events. They should remember, we do collect intelligence on them.

“We will take very decisive action and they will bear the full brunt of the criminal justice system. Our commitment to security and safety is non-negotiable.”
