Tony Blair admits he got it wrong over problem families

Saturday April 28,2007

Tony Blair has admitted he was "misguided" to believe problem families could be dealt with simply by investing in run-down neighbourhoods.

The Prime Minister said his analysis of the problem had been "incomplete" and led Labour to "the wrong policy conclusion" during his decade in power.

And he accused Tory leader David Cameron of repeating his mistake 15 years on by claiming anti-social behaviour was a symptom of wider problems in society.

Writing in Saturday's Daily Telegraph, he pointed to the "shocking" behaviour of 10-year-old Anthony Bird who became one of the youngest people to be given an Asbo.

"But the answer, I'm afraid, is neither to give his father more benefit or for society to explain why such behaviour is wrong," he said.

"And go and ask the community if they would prefer the Asbo not to exist.

"What I have learnt over these 10 years is that the original analysis I had was incomplete and therefore misguided, i.e., guiding us to the wrong policy conclusion, not in the sense that investment in poorer neighbourhoods and regeneration was wrong - it has been absolutely right - but in the sense that it will not deal with this small and unrepresentative minority.

"Likewise, when David Cameron argues that ASB (anti-social behaviour) laws are 'counter-productive' because we all have to take responsibility, that is also misguided. Repealing ASB laws is the last thing we need."

Mr Blair said the "one big difference" in his thinking today was that he now recognised that measures such as Sure Start and the New Deal could not "cure" crime and bad behaviour.

Then, he said, he believed "the rising tide would lift all ships, including those families in a hopeless and often helpless situation, bringing up feckless and irresponsible children".

BLAIR YOB POLICY

28.04.07, 12:39pm

Are we starting to get a confession period from Blair? He said "the yob policy was misguided" He has admitted that multiculturalism was a mistake. The Iranian hostages selling their stories was a mistake that he was not aware off. In addition, Blair constantly criticises the Judges who use Human Rights to release terror suspects, the Human Rights he signed for, the list is endless. Is this man seeking some sort of public redemption for his catastrophic mistakes? He should go quickly and quietly before the Old Bill nab him for the cash for honours Fiasco!

BLAIR ADMITS YOB POLICY MIGUIDED

28.04.07, 11:05am

This is vintage Blair who has not got a clue! He along with Brown and Prescott should be forced to live amongst the low life they expect everyone else to support. The council estates are like they are because the people are afraid of nothing and are never likely to be evicted let alone be made to pay their way. When you allow this low life one inch they will take a mile. Labour have also imported much of this problem to make matters a lot worse. We have always had people who behave badly but we now house and feed them without making sure they work to support themselves. These families should be given one very stiff warning and then evicted and never again housed at public expence it is the only language they understand they are nothing but spoilt brats and should be treated has nothing else.

MISGUIDED BLIAR.

28.04.07, 10:17am

Misguided my foot, this is a juvenile excuse for getting it completely wrong again as usual, implying that he received advice from others, blaming them.
He like everyone else in the country should have known and did know that by simply investing in run down neighbourhoods would not alone work and is a total waste of taxpayers money.
Education and proper jobs is more of a answer, kick out the influx of foreigners and crooks from this little island of ours who are taking, scrounging all of our money and reinvest it in our kids for the future.
Remember that the scum kids in our society have scum parents and scum grandparents who have naturally, poorly influenced them.
Thatchers evil depravation of jobs was the start of it all.
Bliar must surely realize that these so called kids growing up are different from us, they need educating in respect and responsibility which is a long term project for the future.
They must be caught at a early age so bad influences do not have a lasting effect on them.
They require being made into decent human beings during their early life with good parenting and real good school teachers who in turn require educating and supporting by a government who is honest, cares and knows what they are doing.
The Bliar and Cameron types are too far removed from reality of life on a run down council estate to understand.
There is so much pent up anger at 'missing out on everything' when investment is made in new this and new that it gets wrongly destroyed, fencing ripped down to put old cars on, old buildings burned out, schools robbed, thieving on a large scale to pay for drugs and so on.
Bliar said education, education, education, where the hell is it?
I am not making excuses but coming from this background I do know more than Tone and his despotic uncaring misgovernment.
He has a committee for this and a committee for that and loads of committees and puts all the wrong types of people on them. You need a gallimaufry from different backgrounds, not just 'well to do' individuals who do not really need a job anyway, give the hoi polloi a chance.

Remember Thatcher milk snatcher, Cameron will be worse.
Bliar will go down as the biggest UK failure in our long history, he has made us a laughing stock of the world.
Why is it that whoever becomes prime minister is mostly useless, and in this case detested?
God help us.
