ROBINHO LIFT-OFF

Bid: Robinho

Friday August 8,2008

By Matt Law

Chelsea last night launched their bid for Real Madrid forward Robinho, making an official £20million offer.

Brazil winger Robinho, 24, has always been Luiz Felipe Scolari’s No1 transfer target and club sources confirmed a bid has been lodged. But Chelsea will have to pay nearer £30m to get their man.

Chief executive Peter Kenyon had believed the move was dependent on Madrid signing a replacement and hope looked to be fading when Cristiano Ronaldo announced he would not be moving to the Bernabeu – this season, at least.

But sources in Spain claim, despite missing out on Ronaldo, Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has given the green light for Robinho to go because he feels new signing Rafael van der Vaart can fill the void.

Although Schuster would prefer Robinho to stay, he is loath to keep an unhappy player. Madrid president Ramon Calderon and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic had already sanctioned the sale of Robinho after holding contract talks with him in London during the Emirates Cup last weekend.

They were prepared to offer Robinho a five-year deal worth £2.5m for the first two years and then £3.5m for the remaining three years, but he is understood to have reiterated his desire to move to Stamford Bridge.

Madrid could bank the £30m they would receive from Chelsea to fund another bid for Ronaldo next summer.

Robinho feels undervalued at Madrid and is unhappy he was prevented from going to the Olympics. He will be made to feel a great deal more important by Chelsea with the offer of a

£120,000-a-week contract.

Former Madrid and Liverpool winger Steve McManaman believes Robinho would be the signing of the summer if Chelsea manage to land him and has tipped Deco to be a big hit in the Premier League.

“I like the fact Chelsea bought Deco and also that they are after Robinho,” said McManaman.

“It signals a way in which they want to play.

“Even though Deco is 30, he is still a high-quality player and he will give them something a bit different, which they need.

“Chelsea suffered last season because they couldn’t always break down teams. If they can’t do it by pace and power, they can do it with a bit of guile and that seems to be the way they are going this year.

“In some of the pre-season games, Chelsea have been outstanding and, although he will be under a lot of pressure, Scolari will make the team a bit more exciting.”

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has expressed his regret at not managing to sign Frank Lampard this summer.

Chelsea’s refusal to sell England midfielder Lampard to former boss Jose Mourinho meant Inter were forced to bring in Sulley Muntari from Portsmouth instead, who Moratti believes will be a big success.

Lampard won his fight for a new, five-year deal at Stamford Bridge  and Moratti said: “There was a big problem with the kid, in that he belonged to Chelsea. The club wouldn’t let him go and so it wouldn’t have been easy for him to come.

“Everything that potentially seemed possible turned out not to be so and, therefore, it appeared to us that there was no point chasing someone for six months. We went for the alternative we had which was Sulley Muntari, who is showing himself to be a great  acquisition.

“I don’t think we’ll go back into the market or that Jose Mourinho has any other intentions. We have a lot of faith in the players already here and we also hope our injured players will be back soon.”
