GERS HAVE TITLE DESIRE AFTER EUROPEAN SHAME

By Andy McInnes

Walter Smith believes his euro gutted Rangers players will be driven by desire to wrest the Premier League Title away from rivals Celtic.

The Ibrox boss feels his men are still hurting from last season's Championship capitulation and that will provide the motivation needed for the new campaign which gets underway at Falkirk tomorrow.

Rangers face a tough start with three away matches against the Bairns, Aberdeen and Celtic and just  one home tie against Hearts on Saturday week piling the early season pressure on the struggling club.

But although his side has been humbled in summer friendlies and by their Champions League exit to Kaunas on Tuesday Smith is convinced he still has the players to produce the domestic goods.

''Of course we are obviously disappointed when we look back on what happened last season when we took the lead in the League but were unable to clinch it'' he said.

''I don't think there is any doubt that the events of the last year will be a motivation for my players starting against Falkirk this weekend.

''Getting back into the swing of things will help us I'm sure.''

Goal grabber Kris Boyd agrees with his manager insisting he and his team-mates are determined to stop the rot and kick-start their season with a win over Falkirk.

''We know it will be a hard one but all the boys are desperate to get off to a flyer in the League. We did pretty well against them last season and we all realise now how important it is to get off to a good start this time around.

''If we can do well in the opening games then it would give the lads a lot of confidence for the months ahead to push for the Title itself.''
