290 MUGGINGS EVERY DAY IN BRITAIN

Friday April 27,2007

By Tom Whitehead

And the government insists that we are safer than ever.

STREET crime is soaring, with 290 people in Britain being mugged every day.

The number of robberies has risen by eight per cent and the rate is now at its highest for more than three years.

Despite the official figures, the Government insists that our communities are safer than ever. Yet fatal shootings, vandalism and drug offences are all up and the public now stand a one-in-four chance of being a victim of crime.

Concerns over anti-social behaviour, drunkenness and nuisance neighbours are also increasing, making a mockery of Tony Blair’s “respect” agenda.

And the public have lost faith in the criminal justice system, with even fewer now believing it delivers justice, cuts crime or helps victims. There was anger last night that 14 years after Mr Blair issued his famous pledge to be “tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime”, Labour had still failed to make the streets safe.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: “These figures betray the Government’s continuing failure to tackle the menace of street crime in this country.

“They also show widespread concern about drug use and an increase in drug crime.

“The Government cannot ignore the link between these two factors. Drugs not only destroy communities, they undermine our efforts to combat other crime, particularly street robbery which is fuelled by drugs.” Lib Dem spokesman Nick Clegg said: “If tough talk, Government gimmicks and endless legislation could cut crime, Britain would be the safest country in the world.

“But these figures show that is very far from being the case, with robberies and vandalism rising month by month.”

There were 26,600 robberies recorded in England and Wales in the final three months of last year.

That was an eight per cent rise on the same period in 2005 and the highest figure since the third quarter of 2003.

It means around 290 muggings are committed on our streets every day. But anti-knife campaigners warned that the true figure could be four times higher.

Clive Elliott, operational director of Victims of Crime Trust, said recorded muggings were just the tip of the iceberg.
He said: “We believe that three out of four robberies are not reported, so the true figure could be as high as 400,000 robberies every year.

“That is how out of control robbery has become on the streets of Britain.”

In an e-mail to Labour activists earlier this month, however, Mr Blair insisted: “We have made communities more secure.”

Yesterday’s figures from the Home Office show that drug offences rose by three per cent to 48,200 in the three months to December last year.

Fatal shootings during 2006 were up eight per cent to 57 compared with the previous year although overall gun crime fell by 16 per cent to 9,513 incidents.

While overall recorded crime fell by two per cent in the last quarter of 2006, separate figures from the British Crime Survey, based on interviews with almost 50,000 people, show that overall crime rose by two per cent during the year.

The survey also showed that vandalism has shot up by 11 per cent during 2006 to 2.9million incidents.

It revealed the chances of being a victim of any crime have risen more than one per cent to 24.5 per cent.

The Home Office stressed the figure was still substantially lower than its peak of 40 per cent in 1995.

In a further blow to ministers, the survey revealed growing alarm over anti-social behaviour coupled with tumbling faith in the courts and criminal justice.

There were increases in the proportion of the public who are concerned about anti-social antics, noisy neighbours, drunkenness, drug dealing and teenage yobs.

Similarly there was a fall in the percentage of people who believe that the criminal justice system is effective, that it helps cut crime or that it meets the needs of the victim.

On a positive note, total recorded violent crime was down one per cent, burglary was down three per cent and violence against the person fell by two per cent.

Home Office Minister Tony McNulty said: “We have cut robbery by a fifth over the past five years but any rise, however slight, reminds us there is still work to do. Mobile phones are involved in over 50 per cent of street robberies, which is why we have established regional robbery action plans to address a problem concentrated in specific areas.”

He added: “Crime has fallen steadily over the past 10 years. The British Crime Survey indicates that it has fallen by 35 per cent since 1997. This country is becoming an increasingly difficult place for criminals to operate.

“But while I am encouraged by today’s figures – particularly the reduction in recorded violent crime and the 10 per cent reduction of violent offences with injury and the 16 per cent fall in firearms offences – I am also determined to guard against complacency.”

British Transport Police Chief Constable Ian Johnston, spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said:

“We acknowledge that robbery went up in this period. However, overall, robbery figures have been cut by a fifth in the last five years. Our determination is to continue that trend.”

LibDem spokesman Mr Clegg added: “If we really want to cut crime, we don’t need to get tougher, we need to get smarter.

“We need to tackle repeat crime by making education and training compulsory in prisons. More prisoners should work and pay into a compensation fund for victims, and we should extend treatment for drug and mental health problems.

“It’s time to focus on what works, instead of what sounds good.”

●The number of legally held firearms rose by 10,000 last year to 368,600, Home Office figures show.

PRISONS ARE FULL WITH SPEEDING MOTORIST AND MUGGERS GO FREE

28.04.07, 7:45pm

Hi

Lucian does not condon speeding and even kept their speed much below the 30mph allowed on most side roads before the introduction in some areas of a 20mph speed limit.

However, LD does travel, when safe to do so on motorways slighly above the 70mph, a speed limit put in place in the early 60's when most cars maximum speed was 60.

We digress.

The muggers are one of vile group of crims that require a good public trashing once found guilty and this will not stop all muggers but reduce the nuber of offences, trust us!!!!

Britan is safer than ever before if one is a Labour MP/minister/etc, and trust us, millions really believe that and will vote for them again.

For the offical record LD votes for no one as no political party is fit to receive LD's votes!!

Regards

Lucian Deville

MUGGINGS

27.04.07, 11:37pm

This country will continue to slide into decline and turmoil just so long as we have a Labour government, so the answer is quite obvious for the British people. The sooner we can kick these liars and thieves out of office, the sooner we can put the Great back into Britain!

290 MUGGINGS EVERY DAY

27.04.07, 11:12pm

Well, I think this will be Blair's true legacy in history, the rampant crime in this Country that developed through his stupid policies!
Take immigration for example. The government have increased surveillance, data base, and big brother tactics on the indigenous population. Yet they have allowed untold illegal asylum seekers to completely disappear. In addition to this, they have allowed over a million EU migrants to enter the Country but they do not log their entry. Basically there are millions of Foreigners in this Country who are not known to the police or authorities. They commit a crime and the police do not even know they exist!
What a way to run a Country?

27.04.07, 8:19pm

There is one mugging that is far larger and that is the one this low life goveernment do every second of every day. This scum lie cheat and steal from every tax payer in this country. How can they know the true figures when their Police are afraid to enter the filthy areas where these crimes are commited. We will see the extent of the problem when the farce of the local elections come this next month. What is the betting that we see a huge increase in postal voting fraud in the areas that labour have imported their own like minded people. We are dealing with pure filth and we should stand up and say so!. There is no way on GODS Earth we will see a true and fair election just look back at the antics of Blair Brown and The IDIOT! Prescott over these last ten years. I will believe this governments figures when we see Blair and Co; living in and amongst the people they have supported in this country to steal the very same way they do!.

SAFER THAN EVER

27.04.07, 6:42pm

The government don’t mind giving out statements like “we are safer than ever” because they are carefully chosen to be “safe” statements, what they don’t like is giving out real data because it gives you the real facts which they are fully aware of but don’t want you to know. They base their policies on the level of affordability which is matched with the percentage of crime which in turn is based on the population level. So increasing the population will increase the crime but it will still be a percentage of the population in accordance with the level of affordability so therefore you will never actually see a fall in crime, this is because it’s a policy of control not cure. This is to ensure that the businesses involved in aiding and combating it all do well by using positive and negative equity balancing financial techniques, or as Brown would call it fiscal polices, its exactly the same with drugs and wars and the business which provide the machinery and weapons for war… they have no intentions of stopping the inhumanity to man or any other creature because its not financially viable…which basically means there is to much “differential” profit to be made out of the conflict especially as it becomes more of a global conflict
