'JOBSWORTH' BROWN'S INSULT TO WAR HEROES
Gordon Brown is refusing to honour the bomber crews
By Jason Groves and Camilla Tominey
GORDON BROWN’S own MPs last night branded him a “jobsworth” as he hid behind bureaucratic rules to deny a medal to the heroes of Britain’s wartime Bomber Command.
In an extraordinary snub to the many thousands of men whose courage helped save us from Nazi aggression, the Prime Minister said longstanding conventions meant he could do nothing to honour their service.
Responding to the Sunday Express crusade to Honour the Bomber Boys, which won the support of more than 10,000 readers, Mr Brown insisted he admired the “dedication and bravery” of the bomber crews but Government rules meant it was now too late to award them a campaign medal.
Former Labour Foreign Office Minister Denis MacShane however last night savaged his leader’s decision.
He said: “It is very disappointing to hear that this jobsworth spirit is still alive and well. I think the Prime Minister is just setting out the view of the Ministry of Defence and I think they have got it wrong.
“We owe a huge debt to these men for their service and sacrifice, which we can never repay. The campaign will not end here. If necessary we may have to remove decisions on who should receive medals from the MoD and put it in the hands of a more representative committee more in tune with the sense of debt the public feel towards the Armed Forces.”
Military sources said the rules Mr Brown referred to had effectively been torn up by former PM Tony Blair five years ago when he awarded a campaign medal to veterans who had served in Suez in 1956.
Conservative Party vice-chairman Andrew Rosindell said: “This is a bitterly disappointing and very unfair decision. I simply do not accept there is nothing the Government can do. There have been situations in the past where decisions have been reviewed years later. It just needs a bit of political will.
“We will not give up, but the problem is that if they do not change their minds quickly, a lot of people will not be alive to receive the medal they are due.”
Mr Brown also risked a row with the Palace by suggesting the Queen would not want him to intervene. But last night a Buckingham Palace source said the Queen had not been consulted and would be happy to approve a medal if it were recommended.
While other servicemen were honoured with campaign medals Bomber Command’s vital role in weakening the Nazi regime and shortening the war was ignored.
The Sunday Express Honour the Bomber Boys crusade has been inundated with letters from veterans and from relatives of the 55,000 men from Bomber Command who perished in the Second World War.
A petition backed by more than 10,000 readers was handed in to Downing Street last month.
Mr Brown’s letter says the question was considered by the Committee on the Grants of Honours, Decorations and Medals after the war. The so-called HD Committee turned down the request for reasons that remain unknown. Mr Brown said the rules meant it was not possible to award medals for wars fought more than five years ago.
But historian Kevin Wilson said an exception should be made, given the huge sacrifice made by the men of Bomber Command.
Mr Wilson said: “This isn’t a matter of petty rules and regulations, it’s a matter of national shame.
“The teenagers and young men who went out night after night knowing their chance of survival was less than one-in-three would have been astonished if they had lived to discover the Government of the country they loved so much could dismiss them in such a tawdry manner.
“It is time the quibbling stopped.”
Wing Commander Jim Wright, a former Lancaster bomber navigator, said the Canadian, Australian and New Zealand governments were all now considering awards for their own nationals who served in Bomber Command.
He added: “This is the standard response. Gordon Brown doesn’t seem to want change. He doesn’t seem to know what to do. We need to recognise the great sacrifice of people in uniform. There is a great deal of feeling that our chaps didn’t get what they deserved.”
David Graham, chairman of the Heritage Foundation, which has its own campaign for a memorial to the Bomber Boys, said: “Gordon Brown has the chance to put this right. If he wanted he could be remembered for positive things. He should put this right for those who fought and lost their lives.”

MY PETITION FOR THE BRAVEST OF THE BRAVE
25.08.08, 1:46pm
I refer all supporters of a medal for Bomber Command to my e-petition as follows:
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/ForgottenRAF/.
It currently stands at well over 800 signatures, despite receiving very lacklustre support from national media (with the exception of the Daily Express). If one person can galvanise nearly 1000 people to support this cause then surely the general will of the British Public must be behind it. Please note this petition ends onthe 7 September so please sign quickly!

It is simply another case of "someone who "DID'NT" not reckonising those who "DID".
How many Army Personnel have died unneccesarily, in the current (Blair-Inspired Middle East conflict), due to not having the correct equipment? MR BROWN!
