FRIENDLY FIRE AT CELTS WIN

JEERED: Scott Brown

Monday July 28,2008

By Gary Keown in Portugal

PORTO have stoked up their bitter rivalry with Celtic by taking a pop at Scott Brown and backing the fans who barracked him.

There has been bad blood between the clubs since 2003 when Bhoys gaffer Martin O’Neill and his fans felt the Portuguese had dived and timewasted their way to an extra-time UEFA Cup Final win.

And the feud was reignited at the end of Saturday night’s 1-0 Hoops win in the Estadio do Dragao.

Midfielder Brown was jeered by venomous home supporters every time he touched the ball following a 70th minute flare-up with Porto rival Jorge Facile.

He was eventually replaced by Darren O’Dea five minutes from time after he caught Fucile with a tackle and referee Luciano Silva signalled Gordon Strachan that he should be removed.

However, tempers really boiled over after Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink’s 87th-minute winner.

Brown jumped from the bench to punch the air in front of the home fans and Porto official Cacio Pedro sparked off a row with Celtic assistant Garry Pendrey.

Pedro poured fuel on the fire by praising the punters who goaded Brown mercilessly during the powderkeg game. He said: “Our fans behave themselves, so we expect players to behave as well.

“We don’t want to make a big issue of this. We did speak to the Celtic bench, though.”

Porto adopted a physical approach from the off with Aiden McGeady and Brown both being hacked to the ground in the first 10 minutes.

Pendrey ended up in a second-half shouting match with the ref over Brown’s treatment, while Fucile pointed at his temple to make it clear what he feels about the Scotland star. Fucile also attempted to slap Mark Wilson in the dying seconds.

Porto branded the result “unjust” on their website, but boss Jesualdo Ferreira insists he has no problems with Brown. He said: “It was a friendly match, but there are always players who very much like hard games.”

Scottish journalists were also frogmarched out of the Estadio do Dragao on Saturday night for waiting beside the Celtic team bus to speak to players – despite having the blessing of the Parkhead club.
