MIZUNO WILL CALL THE SHOTS

Aiden McGeady

Sunday July 20,2008

Aiden McGeady has tipped Japanese Bhoy Koki Mizuno to be the next Celtic sensation.

The man who knows a thing or two about making an impact at Parkhead – he was last season’s Player and Young Player of the Year – reckons Mizuno is ready to follow countryman Shunsuke Nakamura into the hearts and minds of Hoops’ fans.

“He looks ready to make a big impact,” said the Republic of Ireland star who has just put pen to paper on a new five-year deal.

“Koki has looked really impressive in what we’ve had of pre-season so far. For starters, he is one of the fittest players in the squad.

“I’ve certainly been impressed with what I’ve seen of him.”

But McGeady is quick to dispel any notion that 22-year-old Mizuno is the next Naka.

“He’s a different type of player altogether,” he said. “He’s quicker and more direct.

“And he has had a chance to settle in here now. It must be difficult to come to a different country and culture – I know that would be the case for me if I went to Japan. But he’s been here a wee while now and knows how everything is here.

“I really think he can make an impact this season.”

If Mizuno hits the heights McGeady, 22, believes he is capable of, it will be further proof that this Celtic side is growing up together.

There are a handful of Hoops all around the same age making their presence felt – McGeady among them of course – and he believes the future is bright.

He added: “It definitely helps that quite a number of us are around the same age and doing OK. It’s a very young squad now compared to a few years ago.

“We have similar things in common and hopefully we’ll all reach our peak here which is great for the future of the club.”

Even skipper Stephen McManus is only 26, and McGeady paid tribute to the Parkhead defender.

“Mick was born to lead,” he said. “He was captain through the youths and reserves so he knew what it was all about, although it was a big step up to be captain of Celtic last year.

“But he handled it brilliantly. There was a lot of pressure on him last season after we had won the title the previous two years.

“Considering how young he was for a captain he had a big role to play, but his form was terrific. He had a great season, but even so I think you could see the relief on his face when we won the title on the last day of the season.

“He’s doing a great job, and he’s been captain of Scotland already as well and George Burley was talking about him in glowing terms recently.”

Being talked about in glowing terms is something McGeady can relate to after a terrific season himself, but there’s still no way he considers himself a first pick for manager Gordon Strachan.

“There is far too much competition for places here for that,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone is guaranteed a place here now.”
