HAPPY REUNION FOR BABY SAVED FROM THE FLOODS

Roland and Petie yesterday

Saturday July 19,2008

By Tom Morgan

THIS is the emotional moment when a 20-month-old baby was reunited with the firefighter who rescued him from last year’s floods – on the anniversary of the disaster.

Roland Jones carried Petie Rafferty from his family home in Sandhurst, Gloucestershire, as water poured in from the River Seven.

Panic-stricken mother Penny, who cannot swim, was stranded inside with her three children.

Penny, 26, said yesterday: “It was lovely to meet Roland at last. Petie was too young to remember the experience but seeing your baby carried to safety is very emotional and I’m very grateful. Firefighters do an amazing job.” The family’s mobile home is still being redecorated after the flood.

Roland, 52, said: “I was a small part of a big machine that day and I just happened to have been the one left holding the baby, so to speak.

“It was tough, though. I lost half a stone in weight from working so hard.”
