SECOND WEEKEND RAIL STRIKE PLANNED

Rail maintenance workers are planning a second weekend strike

Friday July 18,2008

Thousands of rail maintenance workers are to stage another weekend strike, the RMT transport union announced.

The strike, involving 12,000 Network Rail staff, will run from noon on July 26 to 6pm on July 27.

RMT members will also not undertake any overtime or "on-call" work between 6am on July 26 and 6am on Monday July 28.

Next weekend's strike follows a first stoppage over the weekend of June 14 and 15.

The second strike comes after talks on a long-running dispute over harmonisation of terms and conditions failed to make sufficient progress.

"It is clear that the company is still trying to use what should be talks about harmonisation as a cost-cutting attack on jobs and conditions," said RMT general secretary Bob Crow.
