THE nightmarish savagery of modern Britain is a direct consequence of Labour rule over the past decade.?
The traditional family structure has been undermined.
Neighbourhood cohesion has been destroyed by mass immigration and the divisive creed of multi-culturalism, while our once fine police force has been transformed into an ineffectual crime reporting service.?
Obsessed with the so-called human rights of criminals, the justice system has lost all moral self-confidence, dishing out meaningless sentences for even serious offences.
Our Left-wing rulers are responsible for the creation of our broken, violent society, which is why their response to the current epidemic of knife crime has been so woefully misplaced, full of contradictions and evasions, handwringing and excuse-making.They are bewildered by the chaos they have unleashed.?
Gangsters already glory in violence, as they frequently demonstrate in their fixation with blood-soaked video games and gangster rap.
As the gruesome death toll mounts, the flailing about from the Government and its apologists grows increasingly absurd.?We hear the constant refrain that we must keep the knife problem “in perspective”, with bogus statistics trotted out to show that, contrary to press reports, violent crime is actually falling.?
But it is an insult to our intelligence to pretend that fear of crime is a panic whipped up by the media. Last Thursday alone, seven people were stabbed to death in Britain, a catalogue of butchery that would have been unthinkable only a decade ago.
According to one study published yesterday, 60 people are stabbed or mugged at knifepoint every day while the number of knife murders has gone up by 30 per cent since 1997.?That provides all the “perspective” we need on ministerial claims of falling violence.
Apart from the climate of denial, there is also the refusal to blame young thugs for their actions.?Even the most vicious gangsters are portrayed as victims, supposedly compelled to turn to violence because of poverty, inequality, boredom or, most absurd of all, “low self-esteem”.
The answer, therefore, is not to punish them but to provide more support through funding, activities and counselling. But this points again to the moral sickness at the heart of the political elite, where all sense of right and wrong has disappeared.
Then there is the Government gimmickry, hollow gestures as a substitute for real action.?Tomorrow, a phalanx of ministers led by the embarrassingly ineffective Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will launch Labour’s grandly titled Youth Crime Action Plan.
Under it, knife carriers will be forced to go to hospital casualty units to see stabbing victims and the potential consequences of their behaviour. This is a ludicrous idea. Gangsters already glory in violence, as they frequently demonstrate in their fixation with blood-soaked video games and gangster rap.?
We need an entirely new approach based on getting genuinely tough with young offenders. We are constantly told by ministers that “there are no quick fixes” but that is just a counsel of despair. The Government could immediately take three steps which would have a far more dramatic effect than any hospital visit.
The first would be to compel judges to pass rigorous sentences for knife crimes, including a minimum of five years for possession, 10 for wounding and life without parole for any murder.
The Government should abolish that useless quango the Sentencing Guidelines Council, which has become just another failing institution devoted to protecting the criminal classes, and instead impose mandatory terms. Then ministers should embark on a radical reform of the welfare state which in its present bloated structure provides perverse incentives for idleness and irresponsibility.
Thanks to the vast array of handouts, too many feckless men can now avoid both work and their duties towards their children, meaning that many youngsters are growing up without any male role models or masculine discipline. Finally, precisely because of family breakdown, we should bring back National Service. Young men responsible for the vast majority of violent crime lack any sense of boundaries or fear of authority.
Many turn to gangs because, even in the most twisted fashion, such groups can provide that structure of respect, hierarchy and discipline which is missing from their lives.?It would be far better to channel that impulse in a positive way, through a spell of tough military or public service for everyone aged between 16 and 21.
National Service would address a crucial issue – the disturbing feminisation of the services which should be protecting the public.More than 90 per cent of young offenders are male, yet the organisations that deal with them are overwhelmingly female.
Nearly 70 per cent of probation officers and 67 per cent of state prosecutors are female, while both the teaching and the social work professions are dominated by women.
This means that wayward young men, growing up in fatherless households, are unlikely to ever come across a masculine figure in authority.
The female professionals, both by instinct and sub-Marxist training, only reinforce the message of victimhood, trying to display their empathy with young thugs instead of challenging them.
For a juvenile delinquent, a loud bawling out from a fearless sergeant major would do far more good than earnest expressions of sympathy from a nervous social worker.
It is no coincidence that Britain was a far less violent, more gentle society when we had National Service. Its abolition has paved the way for the triumph of brutality.

I fear that the military would be a waste of time for these people ,they have no respect for authority and even less for their fellow man. For a long time now my suggestion has been that the only way we can change this situation is by opening' work camps' most of these louts have an abhorrance to any real work therefore a 3 month spell of real hard graft, up at 5am fed, then off to do the tasks that are really in need of some hard work, for instance scraping the chewing gum off some of our streets, cleaning the graffiti which many of them are responsible for,The cleaning of our hospitals which would free up the doctors and nurses to do the jobs they trained for , painting and decorating of community buildings etc etc There are thousands of waYs they could be put to some useful purpose and not too costly, lts face it most of them are bone idle and after a few weeks of real hard labour trust me they would not be keen to go back!
The birch would appear to be something of a deterrent as not many would be back for a second helping:

Anyone who thinks that sending all those yobs to do National Service would change their mind set are dreaming! I did NS and then signed up as a regular for some years. The NS was a hard couple of years. However, these days the yobs would complain about their 'Human Rights' the first step though the barracks gate!! You can bet it would end up costing the MOD millions in compensation for shouting at the poor boys! Britain has gone too far down the road for that to work. In addition the Military would not want to end up with a load of halfwits who would never toe the lline and cause them endless trouble. Plus the fact when you are in the forces you need to be able to rely on your buddies, not much chance of being able to do that with those guys.
As much as I agree with the comments a scheme like this just will not work. "You cant make me" and "I have rights" are the main arguments these scum will come up with and barristers will make even more money from Legal Aid defending them. Anyone who has anything to do with the bad element in young people will know their mantra. Stop giving them benefits and they will slowly realise how tough life can be, dont give them soppy community sentences for which a sick note is used to avoid. Lock them up with no parole, minimal visits and see how quickly they change.
At least back in the 50's if conscripts on National Service ended up in detention for say 6 months or so, the time was added to their two year NS period. I've seen someone do an extra three years making a total of 5 years instead of two. Just because he thought he was a hard man. They didn't get remission or let out early as they do today under Moo-Labours feeble attempts to govern. Providing the PC, Human "Rites" & Bleeding Hearts Brigade keep their noses out....the military have the ability to make people see the light very quickly.
Listen, I was a regular soldier in the 50s and 60s, in a standing army probably ten times the size of today's. The least liked duty, was to be posted to the Depot, where the Nat. Service bods were 'imprisoned'. Yes, in a lot of cases N.S. was merely a prison to the unhappy and reluctant conscripts, and a great number of regulars were 'tied up' nursemaiding / wardering them. [Not to mention chasing after 'runners'!] We no longer have the regulars to undertake these duties, in fact, barely enough to undertake all the duties foisted onto them by our politicos. So who is going to supervise these recalcitrant thugs during their 'National Service'? If you ask for volunteers, it might be that there will be sufficient willing to serve out their pension time playing at being warders, but the present overseas postings would become impossible - no troops left!
