MURDERED: Gabriel Ferez (left) and Laurent Bonomo (right)

Wednesday July 9,2008

A suspect who handed himself in to police investigating the murder of two French students was told to take a seat in a public reception area by a desk officer.

The bemused man, who was suffering burns to his hands and face, slumped in a seat close to two women and began rubbing antiseptic cream on to his injuries.

He then jumped up, threw his hands in the air and said: “They are not doing anything about it!”

Lucy Downer, 27, who was sitting next to him in Lewisham Police Station, south London, said: “How can you talk about a double murder and then be told to go and wait in the reception area? This guy could have had second thoughts and scarpered at any point.”

The 33-year-old man, who is of no fixed abode, was left waiting for five minutes before a detective arrived to arrest him over the murders of Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, both 23.

Police were yesterday granted more time to question him. Laurent was stabbed 196 times and Gabriel 47 times.

Scotland Yard said the man was being monitored on CCTV.

A spokeswoman said: “A detective constable arrived within five minutes and, after speaking to the man, arrested him on suspicion of the murder of two young men in New Cross on Sunday June 29.”
