TAXPAYERS LEFT TO PLUG BROWN’S £7BN BLACK HOLE

BROWN: 'Economic incompetence'

Wednesday July 9,2008

By Gabriel Milland Political Correspondent

TAXPAYERS face having to fill a £7.5billion “black hole” in Gordon Brown’s accounts caused by the economic downturn, it emerged yesterday.

The huge sum is equivalent to putting 2p on the standard rate of income tax.

It means Chancellor Alistair Darling faces the unpleasant choice of hiking taxes, increasing borrowing or slashing spending in next spring’s Budget.

The dire state of the public finances – caused by a collapse in tax revenues – will also worry Labour MPs.

They will have to go into the next election with no spare cash for a pre-poll spending spree designed to win votes and buy off trade union leaders.

One of the biggest projected drops in revenue is money from Stamp Duty.

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research warned that turbulence in the housing market will mean a 50 per cent drop in cash for the Treasury from the so-called homes tax to just £3billion.

In a report by the Institute, research fellow Simon Kirby laid the blame for the cash crisis squarely at the door of Mr Brown and the huge sums he poured into public services when he ran the Treasury. He said: “The public finances are in this state due to overly optimistic forecasts for tax receipts, allowing the previous Chancellor to go on an exuberant spending spree.”

Philip Hammond, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said: “This report underlines the parlous state of the public finances and shows how poorly prepared Britain is for the economic slowdown.

“The report’s prediction of higher Government borrowing, collapsing stamp duty receipts and lower than projected growth next year are the latest manifestations of Gordon Brown’s economic incompetence.”

If Britain does face a recession, then economists warn that raising taxes to fill the black hole would risk turning any downturn into a catastrophic slump.

Cutting public spending would also be likely to push unemployment up in the short term.

Instead Mr Darling is likely to increase Government borrowing – but that will crush hopes of a cut in interest rates as well as potentially fuelling inflation.

Going on a credit binge to pay public sector salaries is also almost certain to mean Labour having to toss out Mr Brown’s much-vaunted “golden rule” of “prudently” only borrowing to pay for investment.

Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman, warned that the economy was now facing a “prolonged crisis”.

The only good news for Mr Darling is that soaring global oil prices will mean an extra £4.5billion in taxes from the North Sea.

But in another blow, it emerged yesterday that the Treasury has now handed over £5.3billion to Northern Rock.

The money represents a loan originally made by the Bank of England when the crippled mortgage lender ran out of cash.

And European finance ministers yesterday piled pressure on Britain to clear up the gap between what the Government spends and what it raises in tax.

EU rules limit deficits to 3 per cent of the total economy – but  the UK is on track to have a 3.3 per cent deficit.

I agree with all comments posted so far. I would just add, pull out of the EU and support our farmers to make us a bit more self reliant.

THE BLACK HOLE OF GAY (IE.HAPPY) GORDON

09.07.08, 11:00pm

When will this pursed, ruby-lipped little man ever get his dour, jowly, visage from out of his sporren long-enough to admit his total failure as an unelected leader?

There wouldn't be a black hole, in spite of Broon's total mismanagement, if Britain hadn't illegally been dragged into the sceptic tank of a European Onion, populated by like-minded t*rds.

We would all be much better off as individuals, free of a massive annual club subscription now paid by UK taxpayers; while British industry would have at least 65 billion pounds sterling left in its pockets annually.

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME!

When are our idiotic, pathetic politicians going to realise that we are NOT a colonial power any more and have no responsibility for countries we once colonised a very long time ago.
These countries thought they could do better on their own and demanded, and got, independence. Many were successful and some were not.
The unsuccessful ones are unable to realise that they are now responsible for their own conditions and cannot blame good old G.B.
As we do not rule these countries anymore then just let them get on with running their own countries and don't come running to us everytime they need money. Our money should be spent on our citizens in the U.K . not put into some African despot's Swiss bank account!.
For God's sake, taxpayers' money in this country should be used to pay the bills for THIS country not used to help those countries that became independent and told us, in no uncertain terms, years ago, to go hang!
