UK NEWSFORTNIGHTLY BIN COLLECTIONS SPARK RAT PLAGUEThursday July 3,2008 By John InghamTHE rat population is exploding in areas where fortnightly bin collections have been introduced. Calls to pest controllers in these districts have more than doubled, a survey reveals.
Sightings of vermin like rats have risen 23 per cent, bringing increased risk of disease, it is claimed.
The fortnightly collections, coupled with a wet, warm summer and a threatened two-day strike by binmen this month, can only mean the pest population will soar, said insurance firm esure after its survey of 1,000 homeowners nationwide.
Critics say the new collection rota – with household waste like food collected one week and recyclables the next – means that bin bags full of rotting food can lie outside homes for up to 14 days, attracting maggots, flies, rats, squirrels and foxes. Families that forget to put their bins out face having the waste festering for a month.
About half the councils in England have opted for fortnightly collections, despite warnings two years ago from Government scientists. And collections could even be cut further, to once a month.
Councils say the system helps to boost recycling, which is vital to avoid fines from the EU under a directive requiring huge cuts in the amount of waste sent to landfill.
But the survey found that the proportion of households calling out pest controllers rose from two per cent to five per cent after fortnightly collections were introduced. There was an increase in wasp sightings from 40 per cent to 79 per cent of households, squirrels from 26 per cent to 49 per cent, mice from 24 per cent to 41 per cent and rats from 15 per cent to 27 per cent.
The head of home insurance for esure, Mike Pickard, said: “It is clear that fortnightly rubbish collections are posing health risks and should be abolished. Pest and vermin infestations can not only cause damage to the home but in more serious cases, can spread disease.”
Shadow Local Government and Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said: “There have been numerous scientific warnings that cutting weekly rubbish collections poses a huge health risk. Yet Labour has chosen to ignore them. The Government needs to wake up. The spread of diseases from rodents is of serious concern.”
But the Local Government Association said: “This report has to be taken with a large dollop of salt. The biggest independent research commissioned by the Government found no evidence that alternate weekly collections have any health impact for residents.
“Commonsense measures, such as keeping waste tightly wrapped and bin lids closed, can help to deal with any problems.
“Britain is the dustbin of Europe with more rubbish thrown into landfill than any country on the Continent. Throwing rubbish into landfill hurts the environment and costs the council taxpayer, with councils having to pay billions in landfill tax.”

FORTNIGHTLY BIN COLLECTION?????
03.07.08, 9:13pm
The only reason for fortnightly bin collection is because of the lack of investment in recycling plant by refuge collection compamies and this incompetent government.
To encourge Recycling a system has to be put in place where by people REALY feel as though what they are being asked to do is worth while, by punishing people for the failures of refuge collection companies and the failer of goverment will achieve nothing but decent and fly tipping and eventually to the people going
out on the streets to protest.
So central goverment and local goverment take your heads out of the sand and try and act like responsible
servants of the people. Please no more Rubbish about
EU targets, these are guides designed to encourage re-.
cycling. NO MORE LIES about monthly collections planned for Geremany. I live there and know how the system works, so get organised instead of thinking
up more ways to rip the public off.
If you need someone to help you sort it out I will
gladly come back home and show how it is done??

FORTNIGHTLY BIN COLLECTIONS SPARK RAT PLAGUE

How many people, whose bins are only emptied once a fortnight, have asked for a rebate on their council tax. We are still getting them emptied once a week and I presume still pay the same percentage of that tax for refuse services.
There again if the council can change the rules of contracts for refuse services, without consultation, then why can't home owners change the rules. GET TOGETHER IN EACH STREET AND ONLY PAY HALF THE REFUSE PERCENTAGE THEY ARE CHARGING YOU.
Lets see each council concerned take 200,000 + people to court.
(Bring on the revolution.)

RODENT PLAGUE AND 2 WEEK WASTE COLLECTION
03.07.08, 12:38pm
I think an increase in rodent and fox problems with bins and bags left for a fortnightly collection was rather obvious to the majority of council tax payers, along with the greater chance of disease and health problems which rotting food can cause. But ..No!!.. our council leaders decide to ignore the concerns of their wage payers and then promptly take on extra 'experts' at additional cost to defend the obvious and prosecute people for getting their rotting rubbish out of their homes for fear of inviting the pests into their homes. At the next election, local or national, ensure that the candidate will insist in their manifesto that weekly collections are brought back for all.

PLAGUE OF RATS
03.07.08, 10:35am
Maybe, there are not so many rats in other European countries is because we are over cautious with our gun laws and a bit soft on vermin. Although it is legal to use an airgun to shoot pigeons, you would constantly be getting visits from the police after complaints from the public. Other countries probably shoot rats on site. You can eat rat you know, provided you cook it well. They are cleaner than chicken.
As for incinerating rubbish, I thought that contravened pollution laws and something about dioxins being released.
As for the Netherlands not having a rat problem despite fortnightly collections, its probably because its a cold country. Maybe if they insisted on weekly collections during hot weather in Britain, that may go a long way to sort this problem out.

So, if we leave EUROPE we can have our bins emptied every week and not get fined by europe ?
So where is the debate ?
Why are we still in europe ?
UKIP has the answer.

FORTNIGHTLY BIN COLLECTIONS SPARK RAT PLAGUE

The reason why, according to the government, there hasn't been a rise in the number of rats is because when you ring the council to complain the first question they ask is 'is it a council property?' As soon as you say 'no' thats the end of the conversation. If you own your property your opinion or complaint doesn't count.
