POPULAR RUNNER: O'Brien saddles the favourite for Saturday's Coral-Eclipse

Sunday June 1,2008

By Chris Goulding

AIDAN O'BRIEN'S insatiable appetite for success at the highest level is set to continue on Saturday when he runs Mount Nelson, King Of Rome and Plan in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

Following his six victories at Royal Ascot and success in last Sunday’s Irish Derby, the bookmakers are not taking any chances with the Ballydoyle trainer.

Mount Nelson, the expected mount of Johnny Murtagh, heads the betting at 7-2 with the sponsors. Unlike in the past,  this year’s race lacks any quality performers.

Mount Nelson is certainly  not top class – his last victory came two years ago.

Godolphin, who have a good record in the ten furlong contest with four victories, have entered the recent Royal Ascot winner Campanologist and the out of sorts Literato.

If Literato returns to last season’s form he will be the one they all have to beat.

Under the guidance of Frenchman Jean-Claude Rouget he beat a host of stars in last year’s Champion Stakes which included Mount Nelson, Multidimensional and Maraahel.

Henry Cecil is likely to run Multidimensional and Phoenix Tower who are both quoted at 4-1 with Coral.

Ladbrokes make Phoenix Tower their 7-2 favourite on the strength of his promising run at Royal Ascot where he chased home Duke Of Marmalade in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

Sir Michael Stoute, who caused a surprise in last year’s contest when Notnowcato had the Derby winner Authorized in his slip stream, has entered Maraahel and Rob Roy.

Clive Brittain, the eternal optimist, makes up the numbers with Hattan, a 40-1 chance. Luca Cumani, who had a wretched time in Sunday’s Irish Derby when Curtain Call was brought to his knees after Alessandro Volta drifted across the course, is planning to run the colt in the Ladbrokes St Leger.

The sponsor’s put him at 8-1 behind market leader Patkai, a 4-1 chance.

Jamie Spencer, who lost the ride on Curtain Call after Cumani’s daughter, Francesca, criticized the champion jockey when he partnered the colt in the Epsom Derby, successfully renewed his links with Cumani at Pontefract yesterday.

Both Spencer and Cumani denied there had been a rift but the pair were on good terms with themselves after teaming up with Lee Miller in the  Fillies’ Maiden Stakes.
