LABOUR DONORS TURN ON BROWN

Gordon Brown has come under fresh pressure as a number of Labour donors publicly criticised his lead

Sunday June 29,2008

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has come under fresh pressure as a number of Labour donors publicly criticised his leadership.

With Labour facing financial difficulties over the repayment of millions of pounds worth of loans, the desertion of backers could be disastrous.

Sir Maurice Hatter, a millionaire businessman who has given more than £176,000, told the Sunday Times he would not donate more to a Brown-led party.

"He was a good number two, but he is not a number one. I was a Tony Blair supporter and I think his successor is doing very poorly. I believe that Brown is a nonrunner. The party would be better without him being prime minister."

Loans totalling £7.45 million are due for repayment or review by July 1, and around £6 million more by the end of this year, according to figures on the Electoral Commission website.

Sir Gerry Robinson told the newspaper he would "probably not" give more money and said it was "hard to imagine it could be worse than it is".

"Gordon is someone who wants to be in control of the detail himself. You can't run a family like that, let alone the country," he added.

Everton Football Club chairman Bill Kenwright said he continued to support the party but that the Government had "lost touch with the people".

"The leadership has to look at some sort of quantum change. There appears to have been a bit of an energy bypass," he told the paper.

Author Michael Ondaatje, whose donations total £1.6 million in the last seven years, attacked the Government's Northern Rock policy but would not say whether he would contribute more cash.

BROWN’S DONORS DON'T LOVE HIM ANYMORE

29.06.08, 7:07pm

Golden days before they end,
Whisper secrets to the wind
Brown’s donors won't fund for him anymore.

Tender nights before they fly
And falling stars that seem to cry
Brown’s doneors do not want him anymore
It's over.

It breaks his heart in two
To know they have been untrue
But, oh what will he do?
When they say to him there's someone new
We're through, we're through.

It's over
It's over
it's over

All the rainbows in the sky
Start to weep and say goodbye
Brown won't be seeing rainbows anymore.

Setting suns before they fall
They come to him. That's all, that's all
But he'll see lonely sunsets after all.

It's over, It's over, it's over
It's over

(With apologies to Roy Orbison)
