WEIR WILL STAY – IF THE MONEY IS RIGHT

ULTIMATUM: David Weir

Saturday June 28,2008

By SCOTT BURNS

RANGERS have been told to up the money if they want to keep David Weir on-board for next season.

The Scotland star is keen to remain at Ibrox but is looking for an improved deal and won’t entertain the pay-as-you-play road that Rangers have put on the table.

The 38-year-old feels he has proved his fitness, playing in the majority of the games last season and if he doesn’t get a new deal then he will consider his alternatives, including Championship Preston.

The player’s future  will now be decided on Monday, when manager Walter Smith finalises his wages budgets with chairman Sir David Murray and chief executive Martin Bain.

Weir’s agent, David Lockwood, said: “Nothing will be sorted one way or the other until early next week.

“There is a meeting on Monday between the chairman, manager and the chief executive and so we expect to hear something after that.

“Yes, it is fair to say David has other options but we are not pursuing them at this moment in time.

“We are only in discussions with Rangers and we will only look elsewhere if we can’t get something agreed with them.”

The Light Blues also expect Andy Webster to finally return to full fitness this summer but they are also looking at bringing in defensive cover.

Watford’s powerhouse defender Danny Shittu is on their radar but any move has been put on hold until Rangers move other players out.

Stoke City are set to bid for Lee McCulloch and Smith may have to take the £2 million fee to free up funds for further strengthening.
