Miss Sharapova, 21, slumped to a straight sets defeat by a fellow Russian, outsider Alla Kudryavtseva, 20.

The world number two – who announced she was playing in shorts this year – looked close to tears after her defeat.

Asked if the fuss about her choice of outfit had affected her game, an angry-looking Miss Sharapova said: “She just did everything much better than I did.” But outspoken Miss Kudryavtseva said she had been determined to beat Maria  because “I don’t like her outfit”. 

Andy Murray became Britain’s last man at Wimbledon. Girlfriend Kim Sears, 20, saw him beat Belgian Xavier Malisse easily. But  British outsider Chris Eaton lost to Russian Dmitry Tursunov, watched by his model girlfriend Emma Cowles, 20.
