EXPRESS COMMENT

ELECTED POLICE CHIEFS ARE OUR BEST HOPE FOR JUSTICE

Wednesday June 25,2008

AS A former serviceman who apprehended a stone-throwing youth, Frank McCourt was entitled to expect the law to be on his side.

But it let him down at every turn – from the police “hotline” that left him on hold, to the officers who arrested him on suspicion of kidnap and then charged him with assault, to the Crown Prosecution Service that went along with the whole charade.

If policing in this country was carried out properly, Mr McCourt would never have been put through any of this.

Police would have been patrolling the streets, making sure gangs of louts were not allowed to wreak havoc.

Even if it had failed to nip trouble in the bud, a decent constabulary would have answered its phone promptly and dispatched officers to protect him.

Following the murder of Garry Newlove, it is outrageous to hear of police forces giving the benefit of any doubt to marauding youths, rather than adults protecting their property.

In the face of such politically correct nonsense, the only answer is a move to elected police chiefs who will know that
if they do not protect law-abiding residents they will be voted out.

The mother of the youth involved in this case should also hang her head in shame. Her intervention helped her son get away with his yobbery.

When he next resorts to such behaviour let us hope that she, rather than another innocent member of the public, is his chosen victim.

ELECTED POLICE CHIEFS, OH YES.

25.06.08, 2:16pm

If by being elected would mean someone would carry the can for woeful failures, then oh yes, minister. That soldiers story is so humi;iating I , like so many, don't know whether to laugh, cry or start gibbering. Is any one else sick and tired of the "lessons have been learned" mantra from the army of well paid quangos and committees who come up with trite and gloriously obvious analyses of life's everyday problems?. We need these elected guys and gals who would do a Rudy Giuliani (hope the spelling is right) who got tough in New York and filled the prisons and young offenders institutes. Do I get a whiff of common sense invading complacency ?.

ELECTED POLICE CHIEFS ARE OUR BEST HOPE FOR JUSTICE 25-6

Once upon a time.
Once upon a time little boy's were known to play ' truant '. one verily believes that parents of habitual truants were brought to task one way or another, borstals, workhouses, birch, capital punishment ! What of 'now' It cannot simply be 'nothing' physically, morally ?
Society needs structure, discipline, hope, even a glimmer would suffice.
