RONALDO: Battle ahead

Monday June 23,2008

By Richard Tanner

CRISTIANO RONALDO will be snubbed by Manchester United’s hierarchy today when he reports back to the club’s Carrington training complex.

Unsettled Portugal star Ronaldo will have a long-standing foot injury assessed by the club’s medical staff, but will not find manager Sir Alex Ferguson, chief executive David Gill or any of the Glazer family waiting for him.

Ferguson and Gill refuse to break their holidays to discuss the player’s desire to join Real Madrid, while the Glazers are happy to back their stance.

Ferguson is not due back from France until next Monday and is understood to have told Gill and the Glazers to reject any bid from Real until he has spoken to the player face-to-face.

That leaves Ronaldo in limbo, but Real believe their case has been strengthened by his admission that he wants to join them. Real president Ramon Calderon said: “If the kid keeps himself in that strong position, the step he’s taken could be key.”

Coach Bernd Schuster has urged his club to “pay what is necessary” to sign Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is also facing a battle with United over his injury. He believes he needs surgery, but the club feel a period of rest will clear up the problem.
