ALL THE WAY: Scolari

Thursday June 19,2008

By Express Football Writer

Outgoing Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said he would revert to the line-up which won the first two group games for tonight’s quarter-final against Germany before predicting: “I don’t expect this to be my last game”.

Scolari leads his side into the first last-eight clash on the newly-laid turf at Basle’s St Jakob-Park all too aware that defeat would bring an inglorious end to his five-year tenure.

But the Brazilian, who will take over at Chelsea on July 1, does not believe his reign will end against the Germans.

He said. “Everything we’ve done has been with one goal in mind.

“We even leave our hotel on the 25th. So I hope we continue with what we planned since we left Portugal. I trust my team and I think we will advance, obviously while respecting Germany.”

The Portuguese made eight changes for their last Group A game, against Switzerland, but Scolari says he will now revert to the men who beat Turkey and the Czech Republic.

“I’m not going to change anything,” he said. “In principle, it’s the same team.”

Scolari reserved special praise for Germany captain Michael Ballack, whose career he will soon see at first hand at Chelsea.

“Ballack is an important player, a great player,” said Scolari, coach of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning side.

“He has a lot of technical qualities and is one of the great players in the tournament. Maybe he has hit peak form over the last two years.

“We have deep respect for Germany’s qualities but we will play our game and try to beat a good side.”

German team boss Oliver Bierhoff called the decision to suspend coach Joachim Low after rowing with match officials in the match with Austria “a serious setback”,  and said: “We cannot  understand it.”

Low is not allowed in the tunnel or dressing room nor to have any contact with his team.
