GERS CLEAR THE AIR WITH SPL

TALKS: Sir David Murray

Thursday June 19,2008

By GARY KEOWN

RANGERS bosses reckon they've struck a deal with the SPL to stop next season being wrecked by another outbreak of fixture chaos.

Blues chairman Sir David Murray and chief executive Martin Bain held showdown talks with SPL supremo Lex Gold yesterday and demanded answers on why the Ibrox outfit couldn't be given more help before last term's UEFA Cup final.

Murray insisted league officials had made Scottish football the laughing stock of Europe after refusing to call off a fixture with Dundee United and give Rangers a clear week ahead of their 2-0 defeat to Russians Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester.

The Russian FA postponed three of Zenit's matches to give them the perfect build-up while Gers had to go through a crazy run of seven games in 17 days that ended up seeing them blow the league as well as see their Euro dream die.

Murray demanded a meeting with Gold to “understand the management and decision-making process” of the SPL.

Murray and Bain used yesterday's pow-wow to voice their concerns and anger over what went on last term and clearly believe they have made a breakthrough in the build-up to the new championship campaign getting underway on August 9.

An Ibrox statement read: “A frank and constructive discussion took place, covering a wide range of issues and concerns.

“The purpose of this meeting was to clear the air and this was achieved. Going forward, this exchange of views has now provided a platform for the future and will help ensure the avoidance of difficulties encountered last year.”

However, Rangers fans are already upset about the list of fixtures produced by the SPL for next term. They are raging at the fact the Light Blues will have three of their first four games away from home and will have a crucial Champions League third qualifying round clash sandwiched between visits to Pittodrie and Parkhead.

There has already been some talk of boycotts of away grounds and vocal public opposition to SPL policy is likely to continue from the stands.

Rangers Supporters Assembly chief Jim Templeton said: “It is a nightmare.”
