Amanda Newton has bowed out of international netball

Tuesday June 3,2008

England captain Amanda Newton today announced her retirement from international netball.

Newton led a transformed England squad to third place in the world rankings and scored a stunning victory over the dominant New Zealand Silver Ferns.

She said: “I’ve hugely enjoyed being part of a really competitive England side, a team with a passion to win.

“But you know when it’s time to go. I’m older now, and I’ve got to think about my career in teaching.”

The 31-year-old has notched up exactly 100 England caps, first representing her country against Jamaica in 1996 and was appointed England captain in 2006.

And this year she led her Superleague team Mavericks to victory.

England Netball's Nigel Holl, praised the outgoing captain’s personal contribution to the success of the world class squad.

Amanda’s record speaks for itself – an enormous, long-term and very significant contribution to England," he said.

"Amanda has lead the team as captain with a real passion for success and an absolute desire to be the best – herself and as a team.

"That determination shows itself on court, off court, and in the way in which Amanda strove to get back to full fitness following injuries.

He added: “Amanda has played a very important and significant role in helping the next generation of new players into the squad.

"I hope that she keeps her passion for the game and we see her involved in other ways very soon – sharing her experiences with athletes who can learn so much from her example.”
