LAFFERTY BID NOT ENOUGH

TARGET: Kyle Lafferty

Monday June 16,2008

By Gary Keown

BURNLEY boss Owen Coyle last night confirmed Celtic target Kyle Lafferty will be going nowhere unless more cash is slapped on the table.

The Parkhead outfit filed an offer of £2.75million plus Derek Riordan and a friendly worth around £200,000 to the Turf Moor outfit last week, but that has now officially been kicked out by the Clarets.

Wolves have also had an offer of £2.5m plus two players rejected, with Lafferty’s agent Gordon Armstrong claiming detailed talks will take place over the next few days now that Coyle is back from holiday in Turkey.

However, the Burnley gaffer, currently studying games at Euro 2008 as part of his FIFA ‘A’-Licence course, has told Express Sport that Lafferty’s future won’t be iscussed unless a better offer is put in writing.

The Championship side are holding out for a £4m package, but Hoops manager Gordon Strachan is a big fan of the 6ft 4in hitman and is expected to go back to the Parkhead board to see if improved terms can be put forward.

Coyle said: “Nothing offered has been accepted and that’s where we stand at the moment.

“There is nothing to be discussed unless someone comes back with an improved offer.”

Wolves have offered a cash sum plus Stephen Elliott and Darren Potter, while Rangers, although not completely out of the race, are eyeing other targets as they feel £4million for Lafferty is tough to justify at this stage.

Meanwhile, reports are gathering speed south of the border that Sunderland boss Roy Keane is ready to stage an audacious summer bid to snatch Aiden McGeady from Celtic.

Keane is said to be willing to offer Republic of Ireland striker Anthony Stokes as a makeweight in a £10m deal.

Stokes scored 16 goals in half-a-season with Falkirk while on loan from Arsenal in 2006 and was the subject of a failed £750,000 bid from Celtic back then.
