IRELAND REJECTS LISBON TREATY
Members of the anti-Lisbon Treaty Group celebrate

IRISH voters have rejected the controversial Lisbon Treaty today, scuppering EU plans for reform.
Prime minister Gordon Brown faced immediate demands to halt the process of ratifying
the treaty as the latest attempt to reform the European Union was
thrown into turmoil.
Voters in Ireland - the only country to hold a public vote on the treaty - administered the same fatal blow to the Lisbon Treaty as was dealt to the EU Constitution by French and Dutch voters in 2005.
The final referendum result showed 53.4 per cent voted No, while 46.6 per cent voted Yes.

Open Europe’s director, Neil O’Brien, said: “This is a resounding
victory on behalf of ordinary people across Europe over an out-of-touch
and arrogant political elite.
“If supporters of the EU Constitution cannot even win in Ireland - one
of the most pro-EU countries in Europe - it is clear that their vision
for the future of Europe is now discredited in a most fundamental way.

It would be tantamount to electoral suicide for Gordon Brown to ignore the Irish result.

“It would be tantamount to electoral suicide for Gordon Brown to ignore
the Irish result and try and force through the Lisbon Treaty regardless
- as the British Government has already said it would."

He added: “The argument for a referendum in Britain is now overwhelming.”

Downing Street declined to comment on reports that the Prime Minister
had called French president Nicolas Sarkozy to assure him that British
ratification would continue.
Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan hailed the apparent rejection of the treaty as a “victory for Ireland and for Irish democracy”.

“People have defied the hectoring and bullying of almost all their
political parties, almost all the Irish media, and political leaders
from across Europe,” he said.
“They have struck a blow for freedom throughout Europe. Truly, today, we are all Irish.”

Supporters of the Irish referendum say the vote was essential to streamline decision-making after
the EU’s expansion to 27 member states.
As all 27 states must ratify the document, prominent eurosceptics have pronounced the treaty dead.
Sceptic David Heathcoat-Amory insisted today the Government must “go back to
the drawing board” and respect the voters of Holland, France and
Ireland.
“Of course (ratification) must be halted,” the Tory MP told BBC Radio 4.
“The Bill before the British Parliament must be withdrawn because under
the European Union’s own laws this cannot proceed now. The Lisbon
Treaty is dead."
Just over three million Irish voters are registered in a European Union of 490 million people.
In 2001, Irish voters almost ruined EU plans to expand eastwards when they rejected the Nice treaty. This was later passed in a much-criticised second vote.
There were 862,415 No votes to 752,451 Yes votes. Turnout was 53.1 per cent.

IRELAND REJECTS LISBON TREATY

Voting no, means absolutely nothing.
It is obvious that the politicians are just ignoring the vote and pressing on. They do not care what the electorate think. They know best, so we can all just shut up and let them lead the way. A leading Labour MP was overheard in the commons last night saying "The amount of money they make out of the union and they vote no. Stupid thick twats" (charming)
If only voting "NO" actually made a difference. I fear the Irish have just wasted their time.

THANK YOU IRELAND!!!
In spite of the fact that Ireland has indeed prospered within Europe it is still not a Gullible Country nor are the populas.
They as most of us want to work together with Europe but not be controlled by them.
THIS IS OUR RIGHT!
Last night I realised that, as, has been mentioned earlier, this Country is being RAPED.
The people keep saying NO and the government are not listening.
Brown and Milliband et al are determined to ratify the treaty.
I dont know yet what GORGON BROOWN has been promised but today I read that a German Newspaper has leaked that Mr Milliband is in line for the role of EUROPEAN UNION FOREIGN AFFAIRS SECRETARY.
I wonder has he got Traitor on his CV.
