DR JOHN: CITY THAT CARE FORGOT

Story Image

Friday May 30,2008

By Robert Spellman

The New Orleans R&B veteran’s blood boils over on this lament to his hometown, post hurricane Katrina.

“The strange fruit of today ain’t hangin’ from no tree,” he drawls on Dream Warrior, citing the Billie Holiday classic.

“[They’re] Layin’ on the ground, left to rot right where they drowned.” This is a powerful statement of righteous anger and the singer’s best effort in years.
