RANGERS CHASE ITALIAN STAR

FLAIR: Raffaele Palladino

Friday May 30,2008

By SCOTT BURNS

WALTER SMITH wants £5 million-rated Italian international Raffaele Palladino to add more of a creative spark to Rangers’ play next season.

The Ibrox boss is actively trying to looking to add more flair to his squad and the Juventus star is high up his wanted list.

The 24-year-old, who has two Italian caps, can operate wide on the left or right or as a second striker and would give the Light Blues some much needed pace and width which they badly lacked last season.

Juventus are prepared to sell Palladino who did play regularly last season but they would need to find a replacement first as Pavel Nedved is also suspended for their opening Champions League qualifier.

Palladino, who was inspiration in Juve’s promotion from Serie B, is very much in demand in Italy, with Napoli, Palermo and Sampdoria all keen to keep him in Serie A.

Smith’s biggest problem could be trying to persuade him to move to Scotland but knows their UEFA Cup final run could also help.

They tried to get Andrea Caracciolo from Sampdoria in January but he decided to knock them back to join Serie B outfit Brescia.

Smith also has a background in the Italian market having signed the likes of Rino Gattuso, Sergio Porrini, Lorenzo Amoruso and Marco Negri.

Rangers are also actively looking for another striker with Northern Ireland’s Kyle Lafferty on their radar but that is unlikely to happen unless Burnley drop their £5 million asking price.

Former frontman Kenny Miller, currently at Derby, is another fall-back option should Smith fail to land his top targets but he knows that move would prove unpopular with his own supporters, while West Ham United’s Marlon Harewood has also been linked.

Smith is also looking to strengthen his defensive options and will make a £800,000 move for Mark Reynolds over the coming weeks.
