In his scathing attack, the Bishop of Rochester said that family traditions had been destroyed in favour of single parents or live-in couples.

The country was plagued by rising drug and alcohol abuse and mindless violence on our streets, he said.

The Right Reverend Michael Nazir-Ali also attacked the “newfangled and insecurely founded” doctrine of multiculturalism. 

In a thinly veiled criticism of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, he warned against any adoption of sharia law as “fraught with difficulties”.

The stark message comes weeks after Dr Nazir-Ali received death threats for suggesting Islamic extremists were creating “no-go areas” for non-Muslims in Britain.
