WE'RE OFF TO BUY A CARAVAN SAY £3.9M LOTTERY WINNERS

NO CHANCE: Stan and Pat celebrate their win yesterday

Wednesday May 28,2008

By Tony Bonnici

A COUPLE who scooped nearly £4million on the Lottery decided to splash out after years of saving.

At least, that was Pat Cable’s idea when she treated herself to a £135 handbag.

Pat, 59, explained: “I went shopping and bought a new handbag but got told off when I got home because it was too much money.”

Her husband Stan said: “When she came home, I just said: ‘What?’

“Having had to count every penny for so many years, that was my reaction. That’s me – I can’t change in five minutes.”

Pat, who has asked for a car for her 60th birthday, said a new caravan to replace their 10-year-old second-hand model was the main priority so they could continue to enjoy their holidays in north Norfolk.

“We’d like a new one but not a bigger one – we don’t like the bigger ones,” she said. “I don’t know what we’re going to do with the rest of the money.

“It won’t change us. We’ll just have enough to buy what we want. We won’t have to worry about the pennies any more.”

The couple, who live near Eye, Suffolk, say they will be staying in their two-bedroom council house.

Pat and Stan have no children and have been living on a monthly income of £500. They do have plans for their money, which is gathering £10,000 a month in interest payments.

Stan, 62, was forced to give up work through ill health 10 years ago.

He said: “We don’t want to move as we love our home. But we’d both like to buy a caravan and go on the holiday of a lifetime.

“Pat doesn’t like flying so it will probably be a cruise. I’d also like a big 4x4, but Pat’s not keen.

“What we really need is a new sofa as we’ve only ever had two in all the 37 years of our married life.”

Stan’s brother Tony, 56, said: “It won’t change them. They will just get what they want and that will be it. It won’t be much.”

The couple would not be the first Lottery winners to splash out on a caravan.

Research by operators Camelot showed one in four people who won £1million or more ended up buying caravans or campervans.

THE SADNESS OF THE "BOX".

28.05.08, 4:53pm

I have no wish to offend nice, ordinary people.Compared to the feral b......ds we excell in, they are great. But could many of our populace admit to thinking that thinking outside the damned box with over three mill. would be a natural and heaven sent opportunity to blow off the mental cobwebs and splsh out. I know what I would - the new yacht, the twin engined cessna etc etc etc........
