SHOULD GREEDY LABOUR CUT FUEL TAX IMMEDIATELY?

Story Image

A line of lorries in west London yesterday

Wednesday May 28,2008

By Louise Barnett Consumer Editor

THE Government’s windfall from the spiralling cost of oil has smashed through the £1billion mark.

In just over two months since the Budget, Gordon Brown’s bonus from oil duty has soared along with escalating prices at the pumps.

Drivers facing daily petrol and diesel rises have forked out £188million in extra VAT since March 12. Over the same period, major oil firms have paid £826million to the Treasury in extra tax.

Added together, it makes £1.014billion of tax paid since the Budget above the Treasury’s forecast. In March, it expected oil to be 84 dollars a barrel but it has averaged 113 dollars since then. Motorists will see the overflowing coffers as further evidence that the Government cares little for families struggling to make ends meet.

The Daily Express crusade for a cut in duty continued to earn growing support yesterday as the true extent of how Gordon Brown is profiting from motorists’ misery was revealed with hundreds of lorry drivers staging go-slow protests around the country and a petition to cut duty being handed in at Downing Street.

They were demanding the Government give them a rebate of up to 50 per cent on diesel duty.

Accountants Grant Thornton have already confirmed that the Government could afford to cut fuel duty by up to 12p a litre in the light of its tax windfall.

Yesterday the Association of British Drivers said that the 50.35p-a-litre fuel duty should be slashed by up to six pence.

Do YOU think greedy Labour should cut fuel tax immediately?

Should fuel duty be slashed by up to six pence?

LETS DEAL WITH THEM WITH THE HELP OF THE DAILY EXPRESS.

23.06.08, 10:06pm

I say we should choose one petrol company and everyone who agrees should buy from that one fuel company. I get my fuel from Shell as they seem more consistant in pricing regardless of where the fourcourts are based. I've found that when buying fuel from them they tend to be a penny cheaper than the national average and all the supermarkets i've seen. In fact i've seen the supermarket forecourts prices rocket recently and they seem to structure their prices from one area to another. This to me is price fixing and when you have a town with few forecourts they tend to hold the consumer to ransom.
Lets get together and boycot certain fuel station companies and force them to reduce prices. If we do this they'll have no choice but to reduce the cost of the fuels they provide as they watch their profits nose dive. It will make good business sense for them to make some profit than none at all and other petrol companies will follow suit as they would be afraid of the backlash being aimed at them.
Come on people and the Daily Express, Lets gang up on them and turn the tables.

GET IT CUT DOWN BROWN.

23.06.08, 9:56pm

Yes the government should cut fuel tax.
I'm not saying that we shouldn't be paying tax on fuel but i, like many others, feel we shouldn't pay as much as we do now.
LABOUR, you were voted in to run the country as best as possible to make the lives of the people in the UK as easy and as enjoyable as it should be. Instead your crippling our public services, allowing crime to spiral out of control and your extorting drivers in the most heinous manner with fuel and vehicle duty.
60% fuel tax is just bang out of order and it needs to be reduced significantly. You'll suffer at the next election because of your behaviour and i doubt if you'll ever run parliment for many, many years to come as a result.

CUT FUEL TAX NOW - OR ELSE!!!

16.06.08, 5:14pm

We are in the grip of another Brown made crisis and this could probably be the worst one yet. The rising price of fuel is freezing our mobility, ruining our prosperity, causing inflation through record high distribution costs and adding to the economic woes caused by the bungled handling of our economy and worsening economic recession. Brown should be cutting fuel tax now to restore some stability but he cant because his economic mismanagement and waste of public funds have landed this country with so much debt that he and his Darling muppet are no longer in control. He grabs every penny of windfall taxes to fund his past and present excesses without caring a damn for the consequences.

With Fuel tax and VAT Brown is stealing half the price of the current £1.36/litre at the pumps. The fuel tax was designed to be a green tax to try and reduce the use of and dependency upon fossil fuels. The high price of crude oil is now acheiving this efect without the addition of a fuel tax. There is no reason for the fuel tax to remain. The fuel tax should immediately be cut by 50% to bring us back to an average £1/litre. Brown should not have mismanaged our economy to the extent that he is totally dependent on fuel tax to survive, he should cut his extravagant spending and economise as the rest of us are being forced to do, if he can't do this he should be replaced by somebody who can. A total 60% tax on fuel is disgraceful at a time when we are facing a national crisis and the real tax level is even higher when you remember that he has already taken 30%(Income tax and NI) from your earnings even before you buy the fuel.

This horrible government is not going to listen to our plight, they do not have a clue on crisis management. They have not the wit to do other than profiteer from windfall taxes and hope everything will come all right in the end. This time it isnt going to work. The international oil shortage is not going to go away. We need urgent and immediate action to force a change of policy and or government. Something like the last lorry owners blockade is probably the only solution but this time they should not give in until the Brown creature is removed from office.

FUEL TAX

14.06.08, 1:45pm

Yes I do think the government should make some reduction in fuel taxation to compensate for the rising cost of crude oil.

I also think it would be helpful if the Daily Express refrained from sensational headlines such as those in the Daily Express on Saturday 14th June which only incline people to panic buy fuel. I am referring to the headlines on the front page and also on page 5.

There is responsible journalism and irresponsible journalism and I'm afraid that the Daily Express falls into the latter category. When I read a newspaper I want to read the facts, not the opinion of the writer of the article.
