MPS IN POPULATION SIZE WARNING

UK population calculations are unreliable, say MPs

Friday May 23,2008

The Government has no way of knowing accurately the size of the British population from one year to the next, MPs have warned.

The Commons Treasury Committee said that a key survey used to calculate international migration in and out of the UK was "not fit for purpose".

It said that there were now serious concerns about the "reliability and validity" of the official estimates of short-term migrants produced by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

At the same time, the committee found that the methods used by the ONS did not provide a full picture of internal migration flows from one area to another.

It said that the ONS's successor body - the Statistics Authority - needed to devise a better way of estimating the population as an "immediate priority".

The committee also expressed concern that personal information about UK citizens gathered in the next national census - due in 2011 - may have to be handed over to the United States, if an American contractor was used.

In its report, the committee said that population estimates were central to the system of national statistics - being used to calculate the allocation of vast sums of public money to local councils, health authorities and other bodies.

However it cast serious doubts over the way the ONS's annual mid-year estimates were compiled. We are seriously concerned about the reliability and validity of ONS estimates of short-term international migrants," it said.

"Evidence for administrative data sources such as the national insurance number register suggests the ONS estimates do not reflect the scale of short-term migration in England and Wales."

The Treasury sub-committee chairman, Michael Fallon, said the Government needed to deal with the problems as "a matter of urgency".

DICTATOR PRUDENCE U-TURN BROWN "HAS NO WAY OF KNOWING ACCURATELY" ANYTHING. FULL STOP.

24.05.08, 3:10pm

Buffoon Brown is surrounded by spin doctors, PR wombles and "advisers" and he could not make a favourable decision about anything.

What about the coach load of West Africans who arrived in my town two weeks ago? Did they slip under the radar? They have all been given houses, furniture, TV's, money and free medication.

I'm all for helping anyone but, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH Dictator Prudence U-Turn Brown.

Return England to the English.

The sooner all those devious Scots in the House of Conmen are repatriated over Hadrian's Wall the better it will be.

HEAR, HEAR!

23.05.08, 5:38pm

Following 'The Boss' comments; where are the banks of lawyers who fought to get Tony Blair indicted to The Hague for war crimes? What about all those m.p.'s who cried that they agonised over the decision to go to war? I find it unimaginable that these cowardly b'stards sit back and let this bunch of criminals in govt dismantle our country and rob us of our liberties. They same almost maniacal in their quest, as if only a clout off the head with a bat would be the only way of stopping them; but it's more than that. This IS their agenda, and we are in the way. The goal is a United States of Europe, and we wont have time to wait for a General Election. These *rseh*les need impeaching and followed up with a total overhaul of the system, otherwise we're all shafted. Howay Michael Mansfield, pull a rabbit out of the hat and show your'e really for the little man!

BUT ID CARDS CAN BE FORGED DISGRUNTLED.....

23.05.08, 12:59pm

Criminal gangs are very advanced these days. Even the best security can be gotten around if you have the means and enough motive.

Besides, we all carry two forms of ID card- drivers licence and NI cards. I have no problem carrying an ID card myself, but what I do object to is having to pay ex-number of £'s for what will in effect be a legal requirement.

Anyway, the ID card question has been rumbling on for ages, and is another argument for another day.....

ACCORDING TO A REPORT THE OTHER DAY, THE HOME OFFICE SEEM TO BE HANDING OUT BRITISH PASSPORTS LIKE SWEETS...

23.05.08, 12:36pm

If I recall, it was one every three minutes (or something like that). There are actually apparently Vietnamese obtaining Bulgarian citizenship papers, and Russians posing as Poles.

Is there a method in this utter madness?

Either they (NuLab) are so desperate, they are importing potential voters, or we are being lined up for full integration with Europe somewhere down the road.

Doesn't that sound wonderful?(!) No borders, no security checks and everyone and anyone coming and going as they please. I seem to recall something similar being tried, although along slightly different lines once before.....and that led to the 1914-18 war. Except this time, the tinderbox will probably not be the Balkans.
