SWEEPING BY-ELECTION WIN FOR TORIES

Story Image

Conservative Edward Timpson and wife Julia

Friday May 23,2008

David Cameron's Conservatives have won a spectacular victory in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election.

They seized the formerly safe Labour seat by a margin of almost 8,000 votes, overturning the 7,000 majority achieved by the late Gwyneth Dunwoody in 2005.

It is another blow for the PM after Labour's drubbing at the May 1 local elections - and a first by-election win for the Tories since 1983.

Tory winner Edward Timpson admitted the by-election was probably the first time many of his voters had backed the Conservatives.

"I have a message for you," he said, after the result was announced. "I am on your side and I won't let you down."

Mr Timpson added: "I am going to stand up for local families, local jobs and, whenever I need to, stand up to the Government on your behalf."

Defeated Labour candidate Tamsin Dunwoody shrugged off criticism of her tactics in the by-election campaign. Referring to attempts to depict Mr Timpson as a Tory toff, she called the campaign "robust but fun".

She also warned Mr Timpson: "It is an honour to serve the people of Crewe and Nantwich - an honour I hope you take seriously. I will be watching you."

David Cameron would cruise into Downing Street with a Commons majority of more than 300 if the Crewe and Nantwich swing was repeated across the country at a General Election.

Result in full: Edward Timpson (C) 20,539; Tamsin Dunwoody (Lab) 12,679; Elizabeth Shenton (LD) 6,040; Mike Nattrass (UKIP) 922; Robert Smith (Green) 359; David Roberts (Eng Dem) 275; The Flying Brick (Loony) 236; Mark Walklate (ND) 217; Paul Thorogood (CTDP) 118; Gemma Garrett (ND) 113.

A LESSON FOR ALL POLITICIANS

23.05.08, 12:00pm

Let this be lesson to all the politicians in the House of Conmen that people are fed up with the lot lining their own pockets at the expense of the public.

We have seen with last three - four decades that all the governments in power- Tory or Labour - have ripped off the public.

Unless they mend their way and stop treating the pubic as fools, they may see themselves in the dust bins.

Stop ripping off Britain!!!

WHO CARRIES THE CAN???

23.05.08, 9:55am

Did anyone watch last nights question time on BBC1? If so you will, have seen Hazel Blears, blindly defending everything and everybody within her government and telling us all how much better off we are under the current labour government.!!!!!!! Is this woman thick or has she been brain washed during one of her frequent visits to the hairdresser to have her hair dyed another shade or riddiculous red! The electorate have recently showed to all and sundry in this government that we are very unhappy with their performance todate. They keep telling us they are listening, well listen to this we dont want you in power, we are fed up with your policies of ruination, we want a general election.
Mr Brown is running scared and rightly so, as the most unpopular PM of all time, time to carry the can Gordie, time to pack your bags and give this country what it wants, what it deserves, what is our right, the right to elect our leader.
If you are truly listening then give us back that right.

THE LEFT ARE ON THE RUN....

23.05.08, 9:36am

Interestingly it looks like the Lib Dem revival has finally fizzled out. The new socilaist Nick Clegg seems to have provided all the inspiration of a damp squib.

The only surprise is that 12,679 still voted Labour. I suppose Labour will always appeal to minority groups.

What would have happened if a BNP candidate stood there? We will never know now.

LANDSLIDE FOR TORIES - GREAT NEWS

23.05.08, 9:22am

This is the best news I've heard all week, long may it continue. My only worry is how many more idiotic and ill thought out ideas will this pathetic Government foist upon us until we get a general election. Their ideas and edicts get more and more outlandish and leftist as time goes by. Gordon Brown says he is listening but he knows what policies are best and will work in our best interests. What arrogance, I hope he realises how the country feels now.

THE MPS VOTED FOR HYBRIDS AND NOW THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

23.05.08, 9:15am

Rarely have people had the chance to give their views so quickly on a piece of legislation but on Tuesday of this week we had out-of-touch MPs strutting around Parliament arrogant that they had voted for animal/human hybrids and easy abortion. Now the people have said what they think. Labour had said that they represented the people but this shows that people are tired of their left-wing so-called liberalism.
