Mitch Winehouse, who accepted  the Ivor Novello award for Best Song, for Amy’s self-penned hit Love Is A Losing Game, told the celebrity-packed audience: “I don’t know what I’m doing up here.

“Amy unfortunately couldn’t make it but she’s getting better and she sends you all her love,” he added.

At that point, almost two hours late, his 24-year-old daughter arrived at the ceremony at a hotel on London’s Park Lane, telling reporters: “I’m really well.”

In contrast, clean-cut pop stars Take That arrived early and walked away with an award for Shine, which won Most Played Song. 

Last year, Winehouse’s autobiographical track Rehab, which she wrote about her refusal to seek treatment for her drinking, won the Ivor Novello award for Best Contemporary Song.

Other winners at yesterday’s ceremony included Radiohead, who won Best Album for In Rainbows, and Mika, who won Songwriter Of The Year.
