THEME PARK FOR TRIAL OVER GIRL’S DEATH FALL

DEAT RIDE: Oakwood Theme Park

Friday May 23,2008

By Martin Evans

A THEME park’s owners were yesterday ordered to stand trial over the death of a girl who fell from a white-knuckle ride.

Hayley Williams, 16, plunged 100ft from what the park called Europe’s “fastest and wettest water coaster”.

The owners are charged with failing to ensure the safety of passengers.

Sunday school teacher Hayley’s parents Alan and Beverley said she dreamed of singing in the West End and they took her and her sister to Oakwood park in Pembrokeshire as a treat.

The girls left the £1.7million Hydro ride until last because they knew they would get a soaking.

Witnesses said they chanted “here we go, here we go” as they climbed to the top of the ride in April 2004. But Hayley, from Pontypool, “flew out” of the boat as it descended to a lagoon at 50mph.

A helicopter flew her to hospital but she never regained consciousness.

Oakwood Leisure yesterday asked Haverfordwest JPs for more time. But they ordered it to go for trial at Swansea Crown Court in July. There will be a not guilty plea.

Hayley’s parents welcomed the prosecution after an inquest ruled out unlawful killing. The Hydro ride closed for 11 months after the tragedy.
