RETAIL SALES DOWN AGAIN

Story Image

Retail sale volumes fell by 0.2% in April compared to March

Thursday May 22,2008

Retail sales fell in successive months for the first time in more than two years, official figures show.

The Office for National Statistics said retail sale volumes fell by 0.2% in April compared to March, the same drop as the previous month.

It is the first consecutive monthly fall since January 2006, and was driven by a 1% drop in food store sales.

One broker had forecast a sales drop of 0.6% during April as a consumer spending slowdown continued to bite.

The drop of 0.2% recorded in March was revised upwards from a drop of 0.4% by the ONS.

Statisticians said there was evidence last month of a shift in food sales to the discount sector.

It was also evidence that a slowing housing market was dragging on long-term sales trends.

The three-monthly sales figure between February and April for household goods, which includes DIY shops, fell by 1.9% compared to the previous quarter.

It is the biggest fall for three years and has deteriorated each month since the start of this year.

Overall retail sales during the last three months grew by 1.5% - down from the 1.9% growth recorded in March.

I WAS GOING TO SAY EXACTLY THE SAME THING EARLIER ON REUBEN....

22.05.08, 11:44pm

but you put it so much better than I, in far fewer words!

So which is it then? Are they up or are they down? Is this a pick up, the early stages of a boom, a blip, a looming recession, a "credit crunch", or are we heading into a full blown depression?

Still, you gotta laugh haven't you? Maybe the DE get their reports straight from NuLab central (sorry DE, didn't mean that really!)
